Verlyn John Schultz

With both grief and hope, we share the passing of Verlyn John Schultz, age 88, of Grand Rapids Michigan – grief that his earthly life has ended, yet deep hope in the promises of the final resurrection.   Verlyn is survived by his 3 sisters: Thelma Elgersma, Marlys Krajchir and Lily Beth DenOuden. Verlyn John Schultz was born on June 25, 1932 in Edgerton, Minnesota. From a young age, Verlyn displayed a deep love for music.  After moving to Grand Rapids, MI in 1950, he soon was inducted into the US army as an assistant to the Chaplain. Once discharged, he continued his education, at Calvin College, and later yet, at the Vander Cook College of Music in Chicago, earning a master’s degree in music education.  For years, Verlyn was the music teacher at the Fremont Christian Elementary and Jr. High School.  After his teaching career, Verlyn moved back to Grand Rapids in 1982 and was a member of the Committee of the CRC to revise the Psalter Hymnal (1987). Verlyn also helped students find the musical instrument that fit them best.  Over the years, he accompanied many trios and musical ensembles.  He was a deeply loved Assistant Organist at Woodlawn CRC since 1985.  He helped introduce the remarkable tenor Fitah Rasendrahasina of Madagascar to West Michigan. Through music, Verlyn brought joy to many lives.  Veryln’s family and friends will have a private memorial service at the Woodlawn Ministry Center (3190 Burton SE) on Thursday, November 5.
