JOHN O. MALONEY

September 22, 1931 – October 21st, 2020

John passed away peacefully at the Manitou Health Center at the age of 89. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Dulcie, his children Ken, Arlene (Colin) Kirkpatrick, Darren (Wendy), Debbie (Gord) Stewart and Patti as well as 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He is survived by one sister Bette (Ray) Tait and sister – in – law Helen Maloney.

John was born in Manitou and grew up on the family farm south of Kaleida. He was the 4th of eight children born to J.T. and Emma Maloney. He attended Overdale School. John was a true farmer, he loved the farm life and willingly took on many of the daily chores at a young age especially if it involved horses. John married Dulcie Kingston in 1953 and settled on the home farm south of Kaleida where they raised their family of 5 children.

John was well known for his many stories, the occasional joke and a warm smile and he was always willing to lend a hand when a neighbour needed help. He was an active community member and volunteered on the Overdale School Board, St. MARY’S Church Board, Community Hall Committee, Manitoba Pool Elevator Board for Kaleida and Darlingford, Pembina Manitou Hospital Board, The Manitou Ag. Society and the Nellie McClung PTA.

John enjoyed working with the livestock which included cattle, pigs and horses! He had a passion for farming history and older farming techniques, and of course “horse drawn equipment”. He and several interested friends organized and presented many seeding, stooking and thrashing demonstrations around the local communities.

As time went on John rented his land and began working as an adjuster for Manitoba Crop Insurance, a job he enjoyed for almost 15 years. During this time he still maintained a small cattle herd and of course some horses. John was well known in the community as an expert horseman and with many years of driving experience, he was often approached by people to train a young team to drive. This was a challenge he thoroughly enjoyed.

In 1995, John, Dulcie and Patti sold the farm and moved to Manitou. Unable to part with his horses, he created a small acreage on the edge of Manitou, where he kept his team of dapple grey Percherons. They were his pride and joy. He had many requests to take them to parades, family reunions and sleigh rides, which he rarely refused. He especially enjoyed giving the grandchildren a sleigh ride at our Christmas gatherings. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, square dancing, floor curling and playing cards.

John is predeceased by grandson, Dean Maloney, parents JT and Emma, in-laws Herb & Dorothy Kingston, siblings Gerald & Betty, George, Lil & Elwin Sotheran, Fern & Bob Nay, Ruth & Len Hink, Sharon & Allan McDougall.
