Douglas James Moritz

Douglas James Moritz, 71, of Vermillion, South Dakota passed away suddenly at his home on October 18, 2020. Doug was born in Vermillion on February 5th, 1949 to Fritz and Ruth (Jenson) Moritz. He graduated high school in 1968 after repeating the 2nd grade due to contracting the measles, mumps, and chicken pox all in the same school year. Doug received a B.S in Physical Ed. from USD in 1973 and a master degree in counseling in 1975. While he was there, he lettered in both pistol and rifle marksmanship, and later became a certified marksmanship instructor. He was also enrolled in the ROTC program and served in the Reserves, obtaining the rank of Captain. He was married to Mary Kidwiler on June 11, 1977, but they later divorced. Together they had 3 sons that he was very proud of. Doug enjoyed hunting and photography, and his favorite movie was Audie Murphy’s “To Hell and Back.” He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by a sister Julie (Bob) Hermann, a cousin, Roger (Pat) Tigert, sons, Matt (Alyssa), Michael, and Mitchell, and three grandchildren, Grayson, Cora, and Austin. Celebration of Doug’s Life will be held at a later date. Kober Funeral Home of Vermillion has been entrusted with the service. Condolences may be posted online to www.koberfuneralhome.com.
