Violet Deane "Backy" Saunders Whay, born September 4, 1943, died October 18, 2020. She was the daughter of Winfield Scott and Mary Edna Newsome Saunders. She is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Edmond "Sonny" Whay; son, Edmond Scott Whay (Edna); daughter, Mary Cynthia Whay; grandchildren, Nicholas and Emilee Whay and Skylar Vanlandingham; sister, Sharon Jett of Mechanicsville and sister-in-law, Lois Saunders of Kent Island, Md. as well as many nieces and nephews. She retired from the Tides Inn of Irvington. She was an avid reader, gardener and golfer. Violet enjoyed most of all spending time with her children and grandchildren. She volunteered at the Lancaster Community Library, White Stone United Methodist Church Thrift Store and the White Stone Woman's Club. She will be missed by her mahjong friends, Alice Dix, Betty Coulson, Linda Kales and Ginger Philbrick.
