William Joel "Bill" Brewer Obituary

Bill Brewer was born to William and Tal Brewer on May 25, 1944. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1962 and then East Carolina University in 1966. Bill passed away Sunday, October 18, 2020. Survived by his wife Kay Hargett Brewer, his children Buddy (Cissy) Brewer, Brad (Amy) Brewer and Susan (Chris) Boggs and his eight grandchildren, which he affectionately referred to as his “team”. He was the best Papa to Will Brewer, Katie Boggs, Callie Brewer, Jake Boggs, Bryce Brewer, Emma Brewer, Sara Margaret Boggs and Rachel Brewer. He is also survived by his brothers John Brewer and Jim (Pat) Brewer, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Tal Brewer. Bill was actively involved in the community through the Kiwanis Club, First Presbyterian Church, Habitat for Humanity and delivering “Saturday Meals” for the church. He also served on the City of Monroe’s Planning Board. Bill had a love for vintage convertible sports cars, owning several during his lifetime. He enjoyed spending time at Litchfield Beach as well as watching Pirate Football. In later years, he most loved spending time with family and his “team” of grandchildren. They gave him the will to continue living despite various health issues. Bill started in the business world by owning and operating Hargett Appliance and Furniture in Monroe. After closing the business in the early 80’s, he and John Hendley partnered to start Brewer-Hendley Oil Company. They started with an old, used heating oil truck, going door to door to gain business. Bill and John, along with Buddy, Brad and Nance Hendley have built a successful business which is now able to help so many in our community. He was so proud when his oldest grandson, Will, graduated from ECU and decided to join the Brewer-Hendley family, making it a third-generation business. We are all truly blessed to have had Papa in our lives. He had a way of making each person feel special, no matter how he was feeling. He was always more interested in others than in himself. He will be truly missed by many. A service and celebration of his life will be held at Emerald Lake Country Club on Wednesday, October 21, 2020. The service will be held outdoors and will begin at 3:00 with the celebration to follow. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to First Presbyterian Church, 302 E. Windsor St., Monroe, NC 28110 or to the Community Shelter of Union County, 160 Meadow St., Monroe, NC 28110. Online condolences may be made to www.gordonfuneralservice.com.
