Helen Mae Flynn was born December 4, 1925 to parents Floyd and Elma (Rider) Flynn in Springfield, Illinois. She was one of three children. In her early years Helen and her family moved to Garwin, Iowa where she attended school until her senior year. Helen finished her education in Marshalltown where she graduated as a part of the class of 1943. On May 23, 1944, Helen was united in marriage to her husband Merle Berger at the Bethany E.U.B. Church in Marshalltown. Two children were born as a result of this union. Merle and Helen celebrated over 50 years of marriage together and many memories were made over this time until Merle’s passing. On June 17, 2004, she was married to Stan Fagerland at Hope United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. They celebrated many happy years until Stan’s passing. She worked for years at Marshalltown Manufacturing making glass thermometers until her retirement. Upon her retirement, she would work at the Hickory Farms kiosk at the Marshalltown Mall during the holiday season. In her free time, Helen loved to volunteer either at the Marshalltown hospital over 30 years or Grandview Heights nursing home while her husband Stan was a resident and after. She loved to take trips to Arizona with Merle in the wintertime. She would make teddy bears to give to her friends and family, go on family camping trips to Minnesota, Colorado, and to Yellowstone, go ice fishing, and most importantly spend time with her family. Helen loved gaming, she was competitive in anything that she played from Five Hundred to games of Aggravation or Rummikub. She was a founding and active member of Hope United Methodist Church and the Lioness Club in Marshalltown. Left to remember and cherish her memory are her children Duane (Ann Gienapp) Berger and Cheryl (Rod) Musser; her grandchildren, Tami (Ron) Saren, Brittany Meyer, Allison (Josh) Steuterman, Jared (Stefanie) Musser, Sam (Kristi) Musser, Ryan Moore and Austin (Emily) Moore; 14 great-grandchildren; her sisters-in-law Ruth Larson and Jenny Berger; her brother-in-law Jack Campbell; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Merle Berger and Stan Fagerland; her siblings Homer Flynn and Mary Ellen Campbell; and her parents.
