Felix A. Vega Obituary

Felix A. (Gordo) Vega was born in Ajo, Arizona to Felix M. Vega Sr. & Elvira Alegria on May 18, 1929. Felix passed away on October 13, 2020 in Mesa, Arizona after suffering from an extended period of multiple health problems. He died quietly at home in the company of his adult children who cared for him since the passing of their mother in 2002. Felix & his wife, Ernestina Estrella Vega, moved to Mesa in 1994 after he had retired from Phelps Dodge and, also after having worked 10 years at Ajo Public Schools. His last 10 years in Ajo were his most cherished years because of how his life had transformed after becoming involved in competitive weightlifting in the AZ Senior Olympics. Felix was able to win 6 championships in his weight division as well as 2 overall powerlifting championships. These accomplishments resulted in plenty of praise from many; however, his greatest enjoyment was the satisfaction that he received from the relationships that he established with many of the high school students who worked out with him and valued his knowledge about weight training. Felix was preceded in death by his wife Ernestina, his son Adam, & his granddaughter Marisa Angelica. He was also preceded in death by 4 sisters; Queta Lopez, Carmen Ramirez, Erminia Lizarraga & Elvira Bon and his only brother Pedro Vega (all resided in Tucson AZ). He also has one surviving sister Josefina Mendez from Tucson, AZ. Felix is survived by his son Felix E Vega, III from Mesa, AZ and his 2 daughters, Diana Vega & Eva Vega-Montelongo, both from Mesa, AZ. Felix was a simple yet dignified man; he believed in hard work and commitment to excellence. Despite any of his personal accomplishments, his greatest pride rested on the love that he had for his family. He will be sorely missed by those who knew him & loved him (R.I.P. Gordo). In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of the Valley at: 1510 E. Flower Street in Phoenix, Arizona 85014
