Nicolae Babuts, Ph.D., of DeWitt, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2020 in Syracuse, NY. He was 90 years old. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Florence Babuts; and three daughters, Dr. Diane (Dr. Craig) Montgomery, Patricia, Vivian (Joseph) Babuts Diaz; and two grandchildren, Nathan and Chase. Nicolae shared a love of studying, as well as the importance of education, good health and heartfelt communication. Above all, it gave him happiness to spend time together with his family. Born and raised in Uzdin within the Romanian region of Banat, Serbia, Nicolae immigrated to North America where he went on to receive his undergraduate degree from The University of Toronto and his Masters and Ph.D. from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Babuts was Professor Emeritus at Syracuse University where he taught for over thirty years in the areas of French Literature and Language. He is the author of six books as well as many articles, and will be remembered in particular for his scholarly contributions within the fields of 19th Century French Literature, literary theory, and for his essays and translations examining French and Romanian folklore. His passion for the development of his cognitive theory of literature made for an unyielding commitment to his work which kept him writing his final manuscript up until the last year of his life. Private services were held at Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel, DeWitt, with Father David Smith officiating. Interment will be in Roseland Park Cemetery, Berkley, MI.
