Verna MacKechnie

Calais – Verna Marguerite MacKechnie, 103, went to be with her Lord & Savior on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at Marshall Healthcare in Machias. Verna was born in Calais on January 9, 1917, daughter of George and Tressie (Langille) Gibson. She worked at Ware Knitters in Calais as a presser. Verna was a devoted and faithful member of both the First and Second Baptist Churches in Calais, where she was a member of the Philathea Club. She also was a member of the Happy Gang and the Calais Regional Hospital Auxiliary. In her younger years, Verna was a member of the Married Women’s Softball League and enjoyed skating, playing basketball and softball, swimming and gardening. In addition to her parents, Verna was predeceased by her husband Harold MacKechnie; their two sons, Ronald and Donald MacKechnie; granddaughter, Leah Jo; two brothers, Herman and William; two sisters, Irene and Gladys; three nephews James Gibson, Kenneth Gibson and Gerald Carter and a niece June Poirier. Surviving are her three daughters-in-law, Ruth MacKechnie of Calais, Caroleah MacKechnie and husband Ricky Ward of Cape Coral, FL, and Wanda MacKechnie of Lincoln; four grandchildren, Maevon MacKechnie and husband Joe Cody of Rockland, MA, Brandi MacKechnie and husband Duncan Stewart IV of Kea’au, HI, Donald “Mac” MacKechnie Jr. of Lincoln, and Ian MacKechnie of Portland; three great-grandchildren, Daisy Stewart, Duncan Steward V, and Fae MacKechnie; nieces and nephews, William Gibson Jr., Phillip Gibson, Jane Greenlaw and her husband John, Mary Greenlaw and her husband Dale, and a special niece-in-law, Diane Gibson.. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, October 19, 2020 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais with Pastors Bob Hinton and Matt Burden officiating. Burial will follow in the Calais Cemetery.
