Gloria Dean Roskamp Strate Schwartz Obituary

Gloria Dean (Mapes) Roskamp Strate Schwartz, age 81, of Quincy, Illinois, went to the Lord on October 11, 2020, surrounded by family. Gloria was born on March 5, 1939, in La Harpe, IL to Lloyd Thomas Sr. and Myrtle Franklin (Kachle) Mapes. After her parents passed, she lived with her loving Uncle and Aunt, Harl and Goldie Melton. She was baptized and confirmed at Ferris Christian Church and graduated from Colusa High School in 1957. Gloria attended Illinois Wesleyan College and Western Illinois University, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in music in performance piano and music education. On August 7, 1960, Gloria married Herbert Roskamp at Colusa Evangelical United Brethren Church. The couple began their life together in Sutter, Illinois, on the family farm for 32 years raising two sons. Herb preceded her in death. On August 26, 1995, Gloria married LeRoy Strate at Payson Road Christian Church, and they lived in Quincy for 23 years. LeRoy preceded her in death. On July 14, 2018, Gloria married Bob Schwartz at Curtis Creek Retirement Village, and they lived in Quincy. He survives. Gloria lived her life around her faith, family, and music. Her love for music began as a child. Gloria learned to play the piano, organ, accordion, and ukulele. At age 12, she won the Crosley Community Carnival Talent Show in Burlington, Iowa. Winning this competition provided her the opportunity to fly to New York with her mother to audition for the Ted Mack Amateur Show where she sang “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.” She was an elementary and choral music teacher at Sutter Elementary School, Hamilton School, Southeastern School District, and Nauvoo School District. Gloria gave piano lessons to many children in the Sutter area which included her sons and grandchildren. Many families and friends requested her musical talents of singing and playing the organ and piano at church events, weddings, and funerals. Gloria served as the choir director, pianist, and organist at Bethany United Church of Christ in Tioga. She also played the piano or organ at Zion Lutheran Church in Palmyra, Missouri; Payson Road Christian Church in Quincy; Curtis Creek Senior Living in Quincy; and Bickford Senior Living Center in Quincy. Gloria was a member of the Sweet Adelines International barbershop harmony group of Iowa. Her hobbies included gardening, canning, crocheting, sewing, quilting, and crafting. She also enjoyed line dancing, traveling, and assisting with woodworking projects. One of the families cherished memories were the creation of beautiful three-dimensional greeting cards which she sent to family and friends on their birthdays and other special occasions. She is survived by her sons, Lance (Tami) Roskamp of Sutter and Layne (Rose) Roskamp of Quincy; stepsons, Steve Schwartz of Atlanta, Georgia and David (Randi) Schwartz of Quincy; grandchildren, Jared (Bridget) Roskamp of Sutter, Jami Roskamp of Quincy, Shanna (Jon) Winter of Quincy, and Jake Davis of Columbia, Missouri; great-grandchildren, Luke Roskamp, Haleigh, Ivy, and Everley Winter, and Zoe Davis; sister, Jeannine Steinhour of Carthage; brother, Danny (Bette) Mapes of LaHarpe; brother-in-law, John Radel; cousins, Judy (Larry) Vance, Jeannie (Mark) Nelson, Sandi Melton; and a plethora of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Gloria is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Lloyd Thomas Jr. (Sonny) Mapes; sister-in-law, Euvon Mapes Radel; brother-in-law, Lloyd Steinhour; aunt and uncle, Harl and Rene (Goldie) Melton; cousin, Todd Melton; and father-in-law and mother-in-law; Elmer and Mamie Roskamp. A private family funeral service will be at 1:30 pm Thursday, October 15, 2020 at Bethany United Church of Christ in Tioga, IL. Pastor Joel Schlater will officiate. A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2020 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Bethany United Church of Christ in Tioga, IL. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the family will not be present. The family is being served by the O'Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home in Quincy, IL. Pallbearers will be Tim Mapes, Terry Mapes, Alan Covert, Don Sewell, Michael Mapes, Steve Steinhour, Don Roskamp, and Kevin Roskamp. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Bethany United Church of Christ Cemetery or donor’s choice.
