James Poindexter Obituary

IN LOVING MEMORY JAMES G. POINDEXTER, SR. October 11, 2020 James G. Poindexter Sr. passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2020, after a long battle from the effects of brain cancer. He was 68. Jim was born on December 6, 1951, in Shattuck, Oklahoma to William Poindexter and Jane Margaret Webster. He graduated from Altmar-Parish-Williamstown High School in 1969 and spent some time at Ranger School in Wanakena, NY. Jim worked as a meter reader for Niagara-Mohawk in the mid 1970’s and for 31 years worked his way up the ranks to a control room operator and later a procedure writer for Nine Mile Point 2 (formerly owned by Niagara-Mohawk Power Corporation). Jim loved his family and friends and anything related to the outdoors. He was an exceptional outdoorsman and was a member of a hunting camp on Rondaxe Lake in Old Forge, NY for many years. He loved hunting anywhere but especially in the Adirondacks. Jim enjoyed a hand full of hunting trips to Canada for moose and caribou, the Western United States and Western Canada for mountain goat, elk and mule deer. He was a member of the Stillbrook Fish and Game Club and taught many hunter safety classes. Jim also owned property in Quebec where he loved to travel. Jim was a self-taught individual. There was not much he had trouble learning to do. He was a very good carpenter and had a creative mind. He helped build the Rondaxe Lake hunting cabin and later he built a beautiful two-story home with the help of friends and family in 1979 in Pulaski, NY where he and his family lived until moving to Parish, NY in 1989. Jim loved being around his family and friends. He played softball for Camden Upholstery for several years, loved to ride horses (pretend he was a cowboy) and coached little league baseball in Camden, NY. He and his family also owned a seasonal camp on Oneida Lake where they spent many fun summers. Jim is survived by his former wife Dorothy (Healy) Poindexter who he shared three children with, eldest son James G. Poindexter Jr. (Jennifer) of Baldwinsville, NY, a wonderful daughter Patricia Ann (Poindexter) Calcara (Jason) of Oneida, NY and youngest son Michael E. Poindexter (Rosemary), one half-brother Thomas R. Phelps (Jill) of Camden, NY, four grandsons, Alex and Jake Poindexter (Jim & Jennifer), Sam Poindexter (Michael and Rosemary), Aiden Calcara and one granddaughter Alicyn Calcara (Patricia and Jason Calcara). Jim is pre-deceased by an older brother, William Poindexter (Eleanor) of Deland, FL. His family asks you to remember this message: keep telling stories. Tell stories of Jimmy, lord knows there are plenty to go around. It is our stories that connect us and unite us and keep loved ones eternal. May god bless his soul and may we remember how he lived and how he fought to the end. Services will be privately attended by immediate family. Arrangements are in care of Harter Funeral Home, Inc. 2983 W. Main Street, Parish, NY.
