Homer resident, Mr. Mark Anthony McCabe, 70, died Monday, October 5th, 2020 at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer, Alaska. No services will be held at this time. Mark was born August 3, 1950 in Los Angeles, California. He received his GED and CDL and was a certified Welder. He joined the U.S. Army and ranked at SP4 The Big Red One. He received the National Defense Service Metal, Good Conduct Metal, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Service Metal, Vietnam Campaign Metal, Sharpshooter M-14, Marksmanship M-14 and 20S Bars. Mark moved from California to Alaska in 1961. He left Alaska in 1968 and arrived in Reseda, California where he joined the U.S. Army. He served in the Vietnam Campaign from Feb. 1969 to Feb. 1970. After leaving the Army in March of 1971, he moved to Canoga Park, CA, where he married and welcomed his daughter. He then returned to Anchorage, Alaska in 1974 and welcomes his twin daughters in 1975. In the 70’s he worked on the Alaska Pipeline for the Teamsters driving big rigs. He also was employed with Anchorage Sand and Gravel driving cement mixers. By the 1980’s Mark found his way to Homer where he worked for John Kosh at Kay’s Concrete driving a mixer truck. Mark had many talents, he was a certified pipe welder, plumber, electrician, and carpenter. Over the years he built several cabins. He considered himself a jack of all trades. He loved the outdoors, was a fisherman, and hunter. To Mark, Alaska was his Disneyland. Mark will be remembered for his story telling. He could tell stories for hours about his adventures in Alaska and Vietnam. Mark was a very loving, compassionate, and caring man, who never met a stranger. He came to be known as “Marvelous Mark” because whenever asked how he was, he would always say, “I am Marvelous.” He found great joy in making people smile. His heart delight was his daughters and grandchildren whom he loved unconditionally. He had a great love for animals over his lifetime with his cat. “Fuzzball” being his most cherished. His daughters and grandchildren said: “Even though you are on a new adventure without us, you will never be forgotten.” The memories he left them with of the wonderful times they had together will forever live deeply within their hearts… “I’ll tell you what” He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Yarber, father, Leland (Mac) McCabe Sr., Older sister, Betty Andrews. He is survived by his brothers; Leland McCabe, Jr. of Tennessee; John McCabe of Alaska, and Mike McCabe of Alaska; sister, Christina (Tina) Thursby of Utah, daughters, Erica Powell of California, Olivia McCabe of California, Justine McCabe of California; granddaughters; Chandler Yoder of California, and McKinzie Powell of California; grandson, Nathan Yoder of California; cousin, Jacqueline M.
