ROANOKE, Joyce Marie Doss Patterson, formerly of Union Hall, but most recently a resident of Friendship Assisted Living in Roanoke, departed this life on Saturday, October 10, 2020. She was born in Appomattox on October 16, 1928, the eldest of the four children of Thomas and Aileen Ferguson Doss. She is survived by a daughter, Martha Jane Patterson, who shared her residence; a son, William Thomas Patterson and his wife, Anne Marie, of Roanoke; a grandson, Joshua Thomas Patterson, his wife, Marrissa and their children, Kyle and Claire, of Lithia, FL; and by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William Diuguid Patterson, Jr., and by her siblings, Carlene Covington, Nancy Hall, and Kenneth Doss, all of Appomattox. Ms. Patterson was employed for many years at Appomattox Garment Company and then after her family moved to Chatham, at Chatham Knitting Mills. After her husband retired from Transcontinental Gas Company the family moved to Smith Mountain Lake. Until the last few years, she raised a large and bountiful garden, the produce from which was enjoyed by her many friends and relatives. She was also well known for generously sharing her homemade cakes and candies as well as her handmade quilts. Due to the pandemic, no funeral service will be held. A graveside service will take place at Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, October 21, 2020. Families and friends in attendance are respectfully asked to wear protective face masks and maintain social distancing. Scott Funeral Home is serving the Patterson family.
