Dr. Joseph John Cutri Obituary

On May 22, 2017, Dr. Joseph John Cutri, husband of 63 years to Jacqueline Cutri, peacefully stepped into eternity to join his Blessed Savior and his beloved wife. Patriarch to five children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, in his final days and moments, he was surrounded by his loving family at his side. Known by his friends as Joe or Doc, he was articulate, well read, sharp-minded, quick-witted and generous with a word of wisdom. His natural sense of humor coupled with his signature laugh will fondly live-on in the hearts of those who knew him. Joe was born in Brooklyn, New York to Rocco and Frances Cutri, Ellis Island immigrants from Calabria, Italy. He was raised in the Big Apple and served in the Army during the final years of WWII. He completed undergraduate studies at Columbia University and earned his medical degree from Georgetown University. As a youth, he frequently traveled to North Carolina where he grew fond of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Southern lifestyle. Dr. Cutri first practiced medicine in West Jefferson, NC, later completing his Psychiatric Residency and also teaching at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. After beginning his Psychiatric practice at Baptist Hospital, he established a long-term private practice in Winston Salem, NC. His therapeutic methods were considered forward-thinking as he implemented innovative treatment techniques, including biofeedback and meditation, decades before they were common practice. He will be well remembered by countless patients and their families having served the medical profession for over 50 years. In his retirement, he regularly wrote for the Winston Salem Journal’s editorial page, gaining a fan base locally as well as special recognition for his contributions to the newspaper. He consistently remained respectful and open-minded to alternate viewpoints and encouraged the same in others. Being always grateful for his many blessings, he was a steadfast advocate for the forgotten and less fortunate. He was loved and respected by those from all walks of life and will be greatly missed by many. He is survived by his five children: April Cutri Horner, Mark Cutri, Grant Cutri, Gina Cutri Selman and Tammy Cutri; seven grandchildren: Rachel Duncan, Joseph Wynne, Kenneth Horner, Jenna Horner, Rory Wynne, Rocco Cutri and Jacqueline Cutri; and two great grandchildren: Barrett Guzardo and Clara Duncan. A memorial service (Mass of Christian Burial) will be held at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church on Friday, June 16, 2017 at 11:00 am, followed by a family service at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Dr. Joseph Cutri’s honor to any of the following charitable organizations that he supported: Catholic Relief and Care Services, Medical Mission Sisters, and C.A.R.E.
