Lendina Mathias Obituary

MATHIAS, Lendina

Lendina passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 2, 2020, in Saskatoon, after living almost 99 years. Lendina was born Leondina Mary Boehm to John and Mary Boehm (Adams) in Altario, Alberta on November 18, 1921. Her parents were German-Russian Canadian settlers who came to Bodo, Alberta in 1912 from Neu Kolonie, Russia. Lendina was the third youngest of her parent’s eight children. In 1927 her family moved to a homestead near Luseland in the RM of Grass Lake, Saskatchewan. Lendina was a prairie settler girl who came of age during the Great Depression and WWII. She went to school in a one room schoolhouse by horse drawn buggy in summer, and by sleigh in winter. She rode horseback to picnics on the prairies. She suffered hardship early, in that both her parents died when she was in her teens. Lendina married Clark Rae Mathias on September 10, 1941 in the Catholic church at Salvador, Saskatchewan. After their marriage they spent time in Fort McCleod and Prince Albert while Clark was in the Air Force, before returning to farm Clark’s family homestead near Luseland in 1945. Lendina and Clark had seven children together. Lendina was intelligent and self-learned. She went from the farm to town in grade eleven to complete her education. This started a path that demonstrated the value she placed on learning. She moved her family from the farm to Luseland in 1951 so her children could go to a town school instead of a country school. In 1969 she moved the family to Saskatoon, so her middle and younger children would have better educational opportunities. All of Lendina and Clark’s seven children attended university. Lendina was an exemplary wife and mother on the farm, in town, and in the city. She was a fabulous cook and baker. She was fashionable and stylish. She had an excellent home sense. She could craft, knit, and sew. She read widely and was aware of international affairs, politics, and culture in historical and modern times. She enjoyed the Arts. She travelled. She accomplished everything with ease. She would have liked to, and could have, achieved much higher academic standing had circumstances permitted. Although Lendina never used a computer on her own she understood the Internet and its wide application. At age 98 she communicated via FaceTime and liked to view family photos on Facebook and Instagram. Lendina is survived by her children: Patricia Mathias (Donald Hamilton), James Mathias (Brenda Pulvermacher), Deborah Mathias (David Niehaus), Kenneth Mathias, Cathleen Mathias (Thomas Teed), and Michelle Mathias (Carey Hunker); her grandchildren: Jane Lund (Randy), Jennifer Hamilton (Ed Kosloski), Andrew Hamilton (Phoebe Otto), Joshua Mathias (Valerie Goudreau), Suzanne Mathias Delarosa (Bruce Ziegler), Yvette Harrington, Julie Harrington, Sarah Mathias (Ty Gibson), Maryanne Mathias, Elena Mathias (Max Major-Bouck), Katrina and Kyle Niehaus, Clayton Mathias (Marije Terluin), Harel Mathias, Joseph, Rosalie, and Sophia Teed; her great-grandchildren: Justin Lund (Kelsey), Travis Lund (Robyn), Emma Lund (Richie Acaster), Anna and Louise Kosloski, Tevita Mathias, Sivaatasi Mathias (Jane Heller), Timotheo and Brendalynn Delarosa, Owen, Leilani, and Kailani Mathias, Tiani and Jaylee Harrington, Brendan Kiss, Coral and Frida Gibson, and Hugo Mathias Bouk; and her great-great grandchildren: Ella Lund, Hunter Lund, and two more Lunds on the way to Justin and Travis. Lendina’s passing is preceded by her husband, Clark, her beloved daughter, Brenda, and her beloved daughter-in-law, Rossy Vega, as well as her brothers and sisters: Katherine, Heronimus, Leo, Austin, John, Elizabeth, and David. Goodbye mom. We love you and we know you loved us back. Arrangements in care of Travis Minor – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
