Dennis John Buchholz Obituary

Dennis John Buchholz, 86 of Lisbon, North Dakota died on Friday, October 2, 2020 at CHI Lisbon Health, Lisbon.

Dennis was born the sixth child of Theodore and Pauline (Hochstetter) Buchholz in Ashley, North Dakota.

Dennis began his pharmacy career in Kulm ND at Kulm Drug.  This is where he met Ruth Young.  After a short 4-month courtship, Ruth and Dennis were married.

In the late 1960’s after traveling across the Midwest, visiting several communities that were looking for a pharmacist, Dennis and Ruth decided they would call Lisbon ND home.

Lisbon Pharmacy, Inc., established in 1969 was where Dennis would continue his commitment to the pharmacy profession and his commitment to his patients, their families and the community of Lisbon began.

In the early 1970’s Dennis continued to be an innovator in the pharmacy profession.  Dennis began one of the first inpatient pharmacies in a small rural hospital when he became the first pharmacist at the Lisbon Hospital.    He provided Consultant Pharmacy services to Parkside Lutheran Home and the North Dakota Veterans Home for many years during his career as well as serving many, many hospice patients.

Always thinking of what new services were needed in the area Dennis began the first local durable medical equipment business in Lisbon.  This business venture brought medical supplies such as wheelchairs, enteral nutrition products and home oxygen therapy to patients so they would not have to travel out of the area for these services.

Dennis was always working.  He was always just a phone call away from his patients and the many providers he worked with over the years.  The phone calls came at all hours of the day or night, weekends as well as holidays. Dennis always saw to the needs of his patients.  In 2005 Dennis was awarded the Al Doerr Award by the North Dakota Pharmacists Association for his outstanding record of community and pharmacy service.

Dennis’s pharmacy career spanned over 50 years of service.  In 2010 he officially sold the Lisbon Pharmacy however you could still find him there behind the prescription counter for several years after that.  And in 2018 he officially retired his final pharmacy position from CHI Lisbon Health.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Buchholz, son, Scott (Wanda Hoffmann) Buchholz, Jill (Rob) McRitchie all of Lisbon, ND; five grandchildren, Emily (Patrick) Nord, Natalie Kiefer, Nicole (fiancé, Austin Deering) McRitchie, Grace Buchholz, Jackson (Alex Kielb) Buchholz; five great-granchildren, Bentley and Maverick Nord, Sadie and Logan Kiefer, Claire Hanson; numerous nieces and nephews.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Albert and Gerry Buchholz, three sisters, Esther Tunell, Eleanor Martz and Lillian Thurn.

Lunch following burial at Lisbon Bissell Golf Club.  Social distancing and masks welcome during all events as well as Green Bay Packer attire.
