John Gordon Campbell Obituary

John Gordon Campbell Deblois – John Gordon Campbell, 79, of Deblois, passed away at his home on Sunday evening September 20th. John was born in Brockton, Massachusetts, to Gordon and Eva Campbell on April 2, 1941.He was the oldest of six children. John grew up hunting and fishing in the woods of Elmwood and would travel to northern Maine throughout his 20’s, with friends to do the same.In later years he would often regale his family with stories of his adventures at the dinner table. John and his wife Lill were married on June 12, 1970. Just this year they had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They purchased a home in Pembroke, which together with help from family and friends, remodeled completely. They had a daughter, Lynn, and then a son, Jason. John worked as a supervisor for Daley Drywall of Easton for 10 years. In 1980 John, Lill and their children moved to Maine. They bought a home in Deblois that John and Lill worked on renovating for the next 40 years. Shortly after moving to Maine John went to work for A. L. Stewart’s later to become Cherryfield Foods, Inc. He worked for Cherryfield Foods for 25 years as Farm Supervisor and was well respected by all who worked for him. John was fair and caring about his people. Before leaving work for the day he would check the parking lot and call on the radio anyone who was still out to make sure they were on their way back to base for the night. He was a hard worker and often during the summer would work 12 hour days 7 days a week, and longer during the blueberry harvest. John retired from Cherryfield Foods at 65, but couldn’t stay away from the blueberry business. At 70, he went to work for Romance Blueberries and worked there for 5 years. John believed deeply in serving his community. At the time of his passing he was a member of the fire department, selectman and town fire warden. John was a member of the Deblois Fire Department for 39 years serving 25 of those years as fire chief. He also held the position of constable for many years. John was a “top notch man,” as his daughter was fond of telling him. His words were always well thought and intentional. Teasing family or friends in a gentle and loving manner John loved to laugh and tried to see the humor in most situations. He enjoyed visiting neighbors and friends and when he returned home later than expected Lill would jokingly ask if he had been “caught up by the lips”. John was his family’s rock. He often traveled to help Lynn work on her house or work with Jason on his “Mistress”. He was often the first person there to help a friend or neighbor in need. John was a devoted family man and is loved and deeply missed by his wife, Lill; daughter, Lynn and her partner Brian Grady of Sebago, ME; son, Jason and his wife Holly of Hope, ME; granddaughter, Grace Rollo and her partner Josef Demers-Messina of Biddeford, ME and granddaughter Robyn Rollo of Sebago, ME; sister Jean and her husband Richard Chisholm of East Bridgewater, MA; sister Sally Campbell Lukeris of Bristol, R.I.; brother James Campbell of Halifax, MA; sister-in-law Sandy Campbell of Halifax, MA; brother Peter Campbell of Charleston, ME; as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins.
