Dr. Hanna Jean Khoury Decatur, Georgia Obituary

Dr. Hanna Jean Khoury

With a heavy heart and the deepest of sorrows, we report the passing of our dear friend Dr. Hanna Michel “Jean” Khoury on May 22, 2017, in Atlanta, Georgia. “A great man’s life is defined by its impact and not its length.” Hanna Michel “Jean” Khoury (April 24, 1967 - May 22, 2017) was an extraordinary physician, scientist, mentor and leader. Hanna was born in Beirut, and attended Collège Notre-Dame de Jamhour in Lebanon, where he met his wife Angela Abboud Khoury. Together they lived a beautiful love story that started in high school and brought them to the United States. Their love blessed them with three gifted children, Mikhail, Iman and Alya, who are living examples of citizens of the world through their creativity, education and manners. Hanna received his medical degree from Université Catholique de Louvain in Brussels, Belgium. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia, followed by his fellowship in Hematology-Oncology as well as a Bone Marrow Transplantation fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Hanna served on the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he led and completely revitalized the Division of Hematology and the Leukemia Program of the Winship Cancer Institute. His extraordinary skill and compassion as a physician, as a clinical investigator, and as a mentor led to many accolades and awards, including being named the inaugural holder of the Randall Rollins Chair. His mentorship skills were not limited to the medical field as he was a certified 4th degree black belt Master in Taekwondo Kukkiwon, avid runner and bicyclist with many mentees that followed. Hanna was an unfailingly joyous, kind and devoted friend, mentor and caregiver to numerous colleagues as well as thousands of patients, all of whom will feel and celebrate his remarkably positive influence for the remainder of their lives. Hanna always knew how to spend precious time with all the people he met and loved, sharing with them his passion for music, sports, and always caring to entertain his beloved with the perfect combination of chocolate and jokes. With Angela by his side, the Khoury family was full of happiness when hosting gatherings such as New Year’s parties and fall barbecues. Like his late father, Dr. Michel Khoury, Hanna was a person of great faith, and was close to his mother, Emma Ghorayeb Khoury, sister Mariana and two brothers Basile and Elie-Gregoire. Hanna is mourned by multitudes, and his life serves as an enduring example of real impact and unshakable commitment to doing lasting good. Visitation/Prayer Service A.S. I am so very sorry to hear about the death of Dr Khoury. He was an amazing doctor and really cared about his patients. He took care of my mom, Shirley Morrow, until her death in 2011. Even when he said it was time for Mama to go to hospice, I believe that it bothered him... Continue Reading

I'm still in shock. I remember him standing at the edge of my hospital bed, telling me I would live. I remember him standing at that whiteboard, as I was bawling, telling me I would survive the transplant. I remember every up and down, the past seven years - he was there... Continue Reading
