JD "Cowboy" Wright Obituary

J.D (Cowboy) Wright of Corsicana, passed away on September 26, 2020, at the age of 92, with his wife and daughters by his side.

He was born on July 19, 1928 in Mildred, Texas to Cortez E. Wright and Ada I. Keeton Wright. He married Betty Slaughter on July 27, 1951, and was blessed with two daughters, Pam and Donna.

J.D. worked many years in the oilfields of Navarro County. He was well known as “Cowboy”, and a master teller of jokes. It didn’t matter the subject, he would always say “That reminds me of a joke.” But what his family will most remember him for was his unwavering love and caring of his wife, Betty, for many years of fighting dementia. He never complained, but considered it an honor to care for her. He always reminded us he would not break his wedding vow to her, in sickness and in health, for better for worse. He said “She took care of me for 60 years, now it’s my turn to take care of her”, which he did up until she had a stroke in 2018 and had to go the nursing home.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Lucille Crowley and Lillian Herrington, brother Cecil Lee Wright, niece Tammy Grounds and nephew Ray Crowley.

Survivors include his wife Betty of 69 years, two daughters, Pam Allen and husband Johnny, and Donna Marrs and husband James, grandchildren, Angie White and husband, Joey, Taylor Marrs Eason and husband Kyle, Luke Marrs, Lauren Marrs Gist, and three great-grandsons, Deacon White, J.D. Gist and J.W. Gist. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Tommie Rogers and brother-in-law Herbert Slaughter and wife Imogene.
Come and go visitation will be at the Corley Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 29th from 1:00 – 5:00PM . Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, September 30th at 2:00pm at Younger Cemetery in Silver City, with Pastor Stephen McElroy officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be all the “sons” in his life, James Marrs, Johnny Allen, Luke Marrs, Joey White, Kyle Eason, and Deacon White and honorary pallbearers will be Vernon Boyd and Ray Robinson.

We would like to thank the Twilight Nursing Home, Dr. Kent Rogers, and New Century Hospice for all your care in his final days. A special thank you to the entire staff at Twilight for your compassion and care for our Daddy and for his family. There are no words to express the gratitude we have for every person there.
Final Cowboyism “Don’t take life too serious, you ain’t gonna get out of it alive" .
