Lou was born in Preeceville, the second of six children born to Melvin and Anna Roste (Mosell).  Preeceville was home to Lou for most of his life, having left to seek employment elsewhere at times in his earlier years.  Just a couple months before Lou turned 14, his Dad died suddenly from a massive heart attack.  He struggled with this for many years as he was the oldest child left on the farm.  He carried a big load and since his Mom didn’t drive, he did a lot of illegal driving, even into town.  He always liked to share that part of his story.

   Lou was educated in the North Prairie country school in his early grades and then in the Preeceville school.  He left school after completing Grade 11 and had thought he'd return to earn his high school diploma, but even after some very terrifying incidents in his jobs throughout the western provinces and the NWT, he never could see a reason to further his education.  During his years of searching for his lifetime career, Lou enjoyed work as a farm hand, oil field laborer, doing road construction and forestry work as a heavy equipment operator, as well as driving semi trucks thousands of miles in both Canada and the US.  There were other things that Lou set out to try, like acquiring his Real Estate licence in 1982.  Trying to sell agricultural real estate in the Melfort area, in times of 17-20% interest rates, just didn't work out.  However, Lou didn't see that as a failure, but rather as the call to return to Preeceville.  It was then that selling farm equipment seemed like the thing to do.  And, Lou loved his career selling John Deere.  He just absolutely loved the interaction and camaraderie with people, both the customers and co-workers, that selling machinery involved. He had such fondness for his John Deere years.

   After Lou's diagnosis on July 6th, he set out to write his autobiography.  Although the rapid progression of the disease kept him from completing that task, Lou did record all the various work he did in his lifetime.  Even though some jobs were more enjoyable than others, they all played a part in shaping the man we all knew and loved.  Lou also wrote about retiring at the end of 2007, and having the time to enjoy his precious family and being a grandfather starting in July 2008.

Lou met his soul mate, Patricia Czornobay, in 1972 and they were married on October 12, 1974.  Lou and Pat both felt that his mother's prayers attributed to their beautiful, blessed marriage.

   Lou had both a zest for life and a strong faith evident in everything he did.  He felt it important to take time for volunteering, and did so in many ways, in the church and in the community. Lou very recently enjoyed helping carve out walking/ski trails in Preeceville and loved hearing trail reports from family, friends, and passers-by. He loved to be physically active in many sports activities, especially cross-country skiing and curling.  He also enjoyed his wood crafting hobby and being a neighborhood handyman and problem solver.  Although he didn't go as often as he would have liked, Lou loved fishing, both with family and his friends.  Sharing jokes and stories were a big part of Lou's life.   

   Lou was predeceased by his parents, Melvin in 1963 and Anna in 2010, his parent’s in-law, Fred and Nettie Czornobay in 2015, sister in law Dianne Czornobay in 2007, brother in law Andy Clark in 2006, and brother in law Alvin Romanchuk in 2017. He is survived by his loving wife Pat, two daughters, Jennifer (Joel Burns) and Karma, grandchildren, Bekkett, Isaak, William and Davi, siblings, Darryl (Rita) Roste, Dean (Judy) Roste, Jean (Reid) Homstol, Colleen Clark, and Shell (Rose) Roste, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members.

The Funeral Service was held on Monday, September 28, 2020 with from St. John Lutheran Church in Preeceville, Saskatchewan with Pastor Dan Haugen officiating. The readers were Jason Feeley, Sarah Vanderveen and Darryl Roste. The pianist was Barb Melsness. Lou’s daughters, grandchildren, Lynnel Person and Ralph Ager offered tributes. The interment took place at St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery with Bekkett Roste serving as the Urnbearer. Memorial donations may be made to the St. John Lutheran Church as gifts of remembrance.
