Margaret Krause Obituary

Margaret Krause (1931-2020) went into the presence of her Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 22nd, at her residence in Gladstone, MB. She was predeceased by her husband John (2011). She is survived by one brother, Henry, children Bradley (Valerie), Royce (Noreen), Miranda (Ron) and Eldon (Linda), fostered daughter Patricia, twelve grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Margaret was born in Mountainside (Morden), Manitoba and was raised there and in Plum Coulee. Her first career was as an LPN working in the Ninette Sanatorium. Marriage and then family (1951) suspended her career.

The family initially lived in Winkler but by 1957 moved to a farm in Wingham. She was happy to be a farm mom until she realized that working all summer on a two-acre garden provided only enough groceries that a week’s work as a nurse would buy. She did an LPN refresher course the garden shrunk, for which her garden-hoeing children were very grateful, and she went back to nursing.

By 1966, the family moved to Portage. Margaret worked in the Portage General Hospital.

In the late 1960’s and early 70’s, hospitals began to purchase their first EKG machines. Margaret was a “founding” member of the PGH EKG install and training staff—a great source of pride and enjoyment. She continued to study everything medical-techy for years.

In the mid 70’s, she decided to pursue another passion – fabrics. Portage Fabrics and Textiles was the front of the building. Husband John’s real-estate office was in the back, although the locations (front or back) depended on who needed room and how good business was.

By the mid 80’s the children were grown and gone. Both real estate and fabrics had lost their lure. Bonanza Restaurant came calling and it was time for a new adventure – first in Portage and then in Winkler. They eventually divested themselves of the business and retired to a small acreage north of Portage.

Margaret home-schooled several of her grandchildren, had a large garden, made new friends with her neighbours (and kept her old ones) until her health began to fail.

The family thanks all those at PGH, Regency Manor, Third Crossing Manor, and in particular, neighbours, Judy, Mike, Ruth (Andre) for all they have done for Margaret. You all helped make her life more meaningful and enjoyable.
