James "Jim" Lee O'Neal Obituary

James “Jim” Lee O’Neal, 93, of Parsons, died at 7:30 A.M., Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at his home following a brief illness. He was born September 28, 1926 at Kansas City, MO, a son of Marvin A. and Ruth (Hundley) O’Neal. His family moved to Parsons when he was an infant and he was raised here and attended school here, graduating from the Parsons High School in 1944. He then served in the United States Navy from 1944 until 1946. Upon his discharge, he returned to Parsons and attended Labette Junior College for two years and later attended the University of Kansas. He was employed at Dayton Superior for fifty-one years, retiring in 2000. He married Carol Smith in 1955. They later divorced. On May 27, 1967 he was united in marriage to Mary Stephens at the Federated Church in Erie. She survives of the home. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church at Parsons. He had been an avid bowler from his teens. He served as Secretary and Treasurer of the Parsons Men’s Bowling Association for over fifty years as well as League Secretary for more than fifty years. He won many city and state championships. He also won the Scratch All-Events title ten times. He bowled four 300 games and bowled in many ABC National Tournaments. After the bowling seasons were cut short last spring, he was looking forward to bowling again. He bowled the first day of league on August 18 and was not able to bowl again. He also loved golf and had five hole-in-ones. He attended many of Parsons High School games as well as the LCC Cardinals. He was a fan of K.U. basketball and the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. Survivors include: one son and daughter in-law - Tim and Jennifer O’Neal, Tecumseh, KS; two daughters and sons in-law – Susan and Kevin Farrar, Auburn, GA, Erin and Roy McCoy, Chanute, KS; one brother – Charles O’Neal, Lee’s Summit, MO; one niece and nephew in-law – Melissa and Pat O’Neal-Gudde, Parsons, KS (Melissa lived with Jim and Mary for many years); one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother- Marvin O’Neal, Jr., and one son – Stephen James O’Neal. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Saturday, October 3, 2020 at the Wesley United Methodist Church with Reverend Tim Bever officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until service time Saturday at the church. Friends may call at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home at their convenience.
