Imelda Byrnes Daly Obituary

Imelda Byrnes Daly, age 80, of Springfield, VA, passed away on September 19, 2020. She is survived by her daughter Monica Daly, son Daniel, daughter-in-law Eileen, and her grandchildren Sloane and Ian Daly. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Byrnes, her brother-in-law John Daly, sister-in-law, Maryann, nephew, Greg, and niece, Jeannine. She was predeceased by her husband, William (Bill) F. Daly, and her parents Walter and Anna Byrnes. Imelda was born on August 16, 1940 in Springfield, MA. After graduating from high school, Imelda worked in Springfield, MA for the telephone company. She met her husband, Bill, at a dance while he was stationed at Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts. They were married in May of 1961. During Bill’s twenty years in the Air Force, Imelda and Bill lived in Texas, Colorado, Libya, South Carolina, England, and Nebraska. In 1978, Imelda and Bill moved their family to Springfield, VA. In the mid-1980s, Imelda began a new career working for the Central Intelligence Agency alongside her husband, Bill. She worked there for over fifteen years in many roles and was promoted several times before retiring in the early 2000s. Imelda was a dedicated mother, grandmother, spouse, and friend to many. As her children were growing up, she was always involved in their education and was a constant fixture at her childrens’ activities, including musical concerts, dancing competitions, and sporting events. When she became a grandmother, she brought this same level of love and attention to her grandchildren and would never miss a concert or game if she could be there. Most importantly, she was an extremely kind, loyal, and loving person who wanted to make her family and friends feel joyful. Among her many hobbies, she was best known as an avid knitter and made hats, scarves, and blankets as gifts and for charity for several years, especially never missing an opportunity to knit for newborns. In addition, Imelda was a devout Catholic and an active parishioner in many churches over the years; she was never without at least one Rosary. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, September 29, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home at 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA 22032. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Imelda’s life will be held immediately after the visitation on September 29 at 11:00 am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 5121 Woodland Way, Annandale, VA 22003. Masks and social distancing requirements will be in place at both the Visitation and the Mass.
