Herbert George Scheitel Jr. Obituary

Service will be live on Benson Funeral Home Facebook page on Monday at 10:30 a.m. Herbert (Buzz) George Scheitel, Jr., age 75, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2020 in Sioux Falls, SD due to complications following esophageal cancer. Buzz was born on October 5, 1944 in Rochester, MN to Herbert and Dorothy (Schye) Scheitel. He graduated from Red Wing High School in 1962 and attended the University of Minnesota St. Paul pursuing a degree in agriculture prior to enlisting in the United States Air Force in June of 1965. In December of 1968 he had an honorable discharge from active duty due to the death of his mother. He then enrolled in the Air Force Reserves and was an active member retiring after thirty plus years of service. Buzz worked as a repairman for Singer Company when he met the love of his life, Karen (Kay) Nasers. Buzz and Kay were married on June 26, 1971 in Heron Lake, MN. To this blessed union they had 4 children Julie, Greg, Jill, and Chad. Buzz worked for the Singer Company until 1974 and then went to work at the Sewing Center in Worthington, MN. Buzz later went to work at the JBS plant where he enjoyed his daily work as a maintenance technician for over 30 years. Buzz had a talent for fixing things mechanical and electrical. He was in his element when he was presented with a challenge to get something to work that hadn’t worked in a while. He lived for helping others. If someone was in need, he would often push off his own projects so he could offer a helping hand. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, having long conversations, and supporting his children and grandchildren in their sports and other extra-curricular activities. He enjoyed listening to country music and was an avid Minnesota Gophers, Vikings and Twins fan. Those he leaves behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Kay; his daughter, Julie (Shane) Timmerman of Worthington, MN, grandchildren Daniel (Aundrea), Carrie (Brandon), Anthony, Brandie, and Emily (Alexander), and great grandchildren Hayden and Isabella; his son, Greg (Kari) of Windom, MN, grandchildren Grace and Ava; daughter Jill of Worthington, MN, grandchildren Maya and Brooklyn; and son Chad (Breanne) of Minneapolis, MN, grandchildren Ezekiel and Anyah. His sisters, Doris Farley of Lake Havasu, AZ, Millie Niebeling of Welch, MN, and Florence Keppers of St. Paul, MN; brother in-law Donnie Thompson of St. Paul, MN; sister in-laws Linda Scheitel of Red Wing, MN, Patricia Moritz of Redwood Falls, MN, Teresa Nasers and Leila Gilbert Nasers of Worthington, MN, and Shirley (Larry) Wagner of Heron Lake, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; premature infant son, and siblings Ruth Thompson, Myrtle, Virginia, David, Charles, Robert and Dwight Scheitel; father and mother in-law, Thomas and Ann Nasers; brother in-laws, Gerald Niebeling, Al Keppers, John Farley, James, George, and Paul Nasers; sister in-laws, Sandy Scheitel, Vera and Carolyn Nasers; and niece Jodie Scheitel. Visitation will be on Sunday, September 27, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, September 28, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington, with Father Jim Callahan officiating.
