Ruth Gray Puckett Obituary

Ruth Gray Puckett, age 99, passed peacefully from this life on September 21, 2020 at Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House in Murray, Kentucky. Ruth was born Lula Ruth Gray on February 13, 1921 to Harry Thrice and Lula Ann (Musgrave) Gray in White County, Illinois. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1939. In 1942, she married Buell Charles Puckett and they enjoyed 62 years of marriage until his passing on September 30, 2004. They were blessed with five children, Elizabeth Ann, Tamara Jane, Charles Grayson, Patricia Lou, and Edward Westmoreland. Ruth was known as a fine cook and an accomplished craftswoman. She knitted, did ribbon embroidery, arranged flowers and created lovely works of art from whatever she found in nature. In her early years, she and her three sisters were in demand as “The Gray Sisters”, a semi-professional singing group. Once she married, she became a full time mom. For 35 years, she and her husband raised their “bonus baby”, Eddie in Albany, Georgia where the whole family golfed and were active in the community. Her neighbors and her church family lovingly referred to her as “Mama Ruth”. For over 40 years, guests who were served at her table recorded names and dates on a tablecloth trimmed in her embroidery. People from all walks of life and from coast to coast were welcome at Ruth’s table. Later in life, she was an enthusiastic traveler (also with her three sisters), and, most of all, a doting grandmother and great grandmother. She had a keen sense of humor, a burning curiosity about the world around her, and unassailable self-esteem. Left to cherish many wonderful memories are children, E. Ann (Tom Wilson) Puckett of Athens, Georgia, Tamara (Dennis) Vail of Fairfield, Charles Puckett of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Patricia (Timothy Rife) Puckett of Murray, Kentucky; two sisters, Helen Book of Batavia, IL and Marquetta Stewart of Mt. Vernon, IL; ten grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews. Preceding Ruth in death were her husband Buell, son Edward, three brothers, Stuart, Martin, and Moses Gray and two sisters, Betty Chalcraft and infant Eva Belle Gray. Due to the continuing threat from the corona virus, a private family service is to be held with burial in Shrewsbury Cemetery in Mill Shoals. A larger memorial service may be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to The Back Pack Program at The First Christian Church in Fairfield and will be accepted at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield, who are assisting the family. Fond memories and condolences may be left for the family at www.nalesfuneralhome.com. Imes Funeral Home & Crematory, downtown Murray was in charge of local arrangements.
