Cassandra Janette Gulley Obituary

Cassandra Janette “CJ” Gulley passed away in the loving arms of her husband and surrounded by family Saturday, September 19, 2020. Per her wishes she passed in her home in Glyndon, Maryland. CJ was born April 11, 1962, in Framingham, MA to George H. And Harriett A. (Watson) Coffin. She joined her brother Herbert JR, and sisters Jennifer, and Michel. When CJ was still a girl, the family moved to Albuquerque, NM. CJ attended Academy High School in Albuquerque, where she was engaged in many activities, graduating in 1980. She then attended and graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Speech Therapy. After graduation, CJ embarked in a career of helping individuals in need, which would shape the rest of her life. She worked for the State of New Mexico, working in the food and medical assistance programs. She became the trainer for the program and traveled extensively throughout the State, providing training to new and existing employees. CJ strongly believed in civic involvement and was always very active in community based groups. She was the President of the New Mexico Biker’s Association and led the drive on two very significant and enduring pieces of legislation. Due to CJ and the groups work, New Mexico put into law a requirement for motorcyclists to wear helmets, saving many lives. She also led the way to increasing the penalties for individuals who cause accidents with motorcyclists. Until that point, a motorist causing the death of a motorcyclist was only a misdemeanor. The NM Biker’s Association, under CJ’s leadership, was able to get legislation changing this to a felony. In 2000, CJ accepted another State position at the Disability Determination Services office. She really enjoyed this work and it led to the truly happiest period of her life. CJ joined the National Association of Disability Examiners and became a National board member and secretary for the organization. It was here at the DDS that she met her true soulmate and the love of her life, Alan Gulley. She and Alan worked at the DDS until 2010, when they accepted positions with the Social Security Administration and moved to SSA headquarters in Baltimore, MD. Shortly after moving to Maryland, CJ and Alan purchased her dream home, the historic Victorian “Loop House” in Glyndon, MD. CJ loved her home and loved exploring its history as well as the history of the area. True to her form, CJ became involved with the Historic Glyndon (HGI). She became the secretary and performed that duty through her tenure. She and the association held open houses as well as coordinated historic home tours. They work with other civic leaders to maintain the valuable historic community. CJ was highly regarded by both her peers and management as a Disability Program Analyst at Social Security. She used her extensive experience in her work and received several Social Security Commissioner level recognitions. In her free-time, CJ was very artistic. She was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed sewing as well as many other crafty endeavors. She enjoyed traveling and really enjoyed exploring potential colleges for her son Ryan in the past few years. CJ is survived by her husband Alan, of Glyndon, and their son Ryan of Santa Fe, NM. She is survived by her sister Michele (Paul) Harris of Murfreesboro, TN and sister Jennifer Marsh of Cleveland, TX. She is also survived by two nephews and four nieces. She was preceded in death by her brother Herbert “Herbie” Coffin and her parents. A celebration of CJ’s life will be held at a later date.
