Melvin Ray Hayes, 83, of Moss Point, MS, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2020. He was born in Pike County, IN, on January 31, 1937 to George and Berneice Hayes. Melvin was a quiet man who loved bird watching, attending church at Christ Lutheran in Pascagoula, wood working and outdoor activities, one of which was riding the grandchildren around on the mower. From an early age Melvin developed a taste for pies; his mother would bake one and put it out to cool, telling him he could only have the one piece she cut out once it was cooled. Well upon her return only one piece was left, the rest was gone. So, since he had such a sweet tooth he learned how to bake pies and cookies himself, which his family thoroughly enjoyed. Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, George Glendon Hayes and Berneice Odessa Willis Hayes; brother, Jimmie Hayes; son in law, Jim Dyer. He is survived by his loving children, Gordon Hayes, Scotty (Theresa) Hayes, Aletha (Johnny) Schollian, Carla (Marty) Underwood, and Stephanie Dyer; sisters, Lillian Reed and Judy Scrogan, along with 24 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren, and other family and friends. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Heritage Funeral Home, locally owned and operated in Escatawpa/Moss Point, MS, is in charge of arrangements.
