Richard (Dick) H. Mestler of Groton NY passed away on September 14, 2020 at the age of 91. He was born On October 2, 1928 in Whitehall, NY and lived in Groton most of his life. Dick was employed by Smith Corona in Groton for several years. He received his architectural certificate from the Chicago Technical Institute and was employed as a draftsman by the architectural firm of Sargeant, Webster, Crenshaw & Foley of Syracuse for over 20 years. His expertise contributed to the design of several schools and hospitals in upstate New York. After his retirement he worked as a custodian for the Groton Central Schools and the Groton Community Health Center. Dick was active in the Groton Community Church and often participated in activities for the village of Groton. He had many hobbies including woodworking, art, writing and pursuing patents for several devices he developed. He was also an avid reader.


He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II. While stationed in Trieste, Italy he met his future wife, Yolanda Zappatori, and they were married in Trieste in 1954. Dick and Yolanda later moved to Groton with their two children. He designed and built their house on Elm Street where they lived for almost 60 years.


Dick is survived by his son John (Christine) Mestler, his daughter Evelyna Hall. Also his grandchildren, Carie (Tom) George, Andrew Mestler, Emma Mestler, Daniel Hall and Joe Hall. His great grandchildren, Jackson and Cooper George. He was predeceased by his wife Yolanda, his parents, Arthur and Maul Cole Ivory, his brother Donald and grandson Eric Mestler.


Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Groton Rural Cemetery with the Rev. Christopher Xenakis officiating.


In lieu of flowers contributions may be made the Groton Public Library.
