June L. Pierce

June Lane Pierce, 100, formerly of Providence, RI, passed away Friday, September 11, 2020 at the Pierce Memorial Baptist Home in Brooklyn, CT. She was born June 18, 1920 in Providence, RI. daughter of the late Harry A. and Emily (Fitzsimmons) Pierce. June was also pre-deceased by her beloved brother, Harry A. Pierce, Jr., who was lost at sea during WWII in 1945. June graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1942, Teachers College, Columbia University in 1953 and University of Rhode Island Graduate Library School in 1973. While at Teachers College, Columbia, a collection of her finger plays and action rhymes was published in 1955 by Wonder Books. After graduation, June worked at Hartley House, a settlement house on the west side of Manhattan as a kindergarten teacher. She retired from Providence Public Library as a Readers Advisor in the Reference Department in 1984. Following her retirement, she volunteered at Hamilton House, RI Childrens Museum and Slater Mill Museum. She was an active member of the Brown Community for Learning in Retirement (BCLIR) offering collaborative seminars on Russian composers, Humor of the New Yorker and Ernest Hemmingway. A lover of music, she sang in many choirs and glee clubs from childhood on. She enjoyed a great collection of swing and jazz records including the music of Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. She also loved travel, especially in Europe. She is survived by her care givers Kathy and Dennis Waters of Titusville, Florida, formerly of West Glocester, RI, Michael Waters of Titusville, Florida, formerly of Dayville, CT and several cousins. Private burial services will be in Moshassuck Cemetery, Central Falls, RI at a later date.
