Petra Nell Williams Obituary

Petra Williams, age 56, passed away on September 11, 2020, in Anchorage, Alaska, in the comfort of her own home. Petra was born on September 22, 1963 in Susanville, California to Carolyn and Henry Johnson. She grew up in Silverton, Oregon and earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Linfield University in McMinnville, Oregon. Petra was a track and field natural at Linfield. She was asked to fill in at the last minute for a hurdles race, and much to her surprise, Petra won the race. She set school records in 8 different events and went on to become the college’s first female All-American athlete in a running event. In 2018, Petra was inducted into Linfield’s Hall of Fame for her 1985 and 1986 achievements in track and field. Over 30 years after graduation, she remains listed on Linfield’s top 10 list in 7 different events, including ranking second of all-time for the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Petra moved to Alaska shortly after college where she met her former spouse Marty Williams. In 1994, her son Carlton Martin was born, followed in 1995 by her daughter Jaclyn Brooke. Petra’s career was in the medical field, as a billing specialist and then an office manager. She worked for health providers in the Providence medical network, Anchorage Medical and Surgical Clinic, and Orthopedic Physicians of Alaska. Petra had many passions. Early in her Alaska life, Petra played on softball and volleyball teams, but then she discovered biking and skate skiing. All who knew her, heard Petra’s call each spring for dirt in order to mountain bike, followed by her snow dance each winter to get on the groomed trails. She loved vacations on the beach, particularly in Hawaii. Petra was a fan of many country music artists, with a particular crush on George Strait. She had a specific taste for Cadillac margaritas and would indulge in her favorite foods at the Alaska State Fair with great excitement. Petra’s deviled eggs were legendary. Petra’s faith in God was strong, and she was devoted to her community at the Alliance Bible Church in Anchorage. She was active in Bible study, her women’s group, ushering at church services, and volunteering in the nursery, to name a few of the ways she worshiped and lived her spirituality. Petra was enchanted by her two-year old grandson, Emmett Chase. A grandmother in love, Emmett captured her attention above any others. Petra was a great mother and a loyal friend. She said with grace, to those that were a part of “Team Pete”, that she was ready to meet her King. She will be missed by many. Petra is survived by her son, Carlton Williams, his fiancé Jennifer Kelsey, and their son Emmett; her daughter Jaclyn Pastena and her husband Carlo Pastena; her nieces Shorty Ogden-Moles and Ashley Jackson; her sister Helen Jackson; her brother Henry Johnson and his children; and her extended family of in-laws. She is predeceased by her mother and father, Carolyn and Henry Johnson. In lieu of flowers, Petra’s family requests donations be made in her memory to Alliance Bible Church at www.abcanchorage.org/giving.
