Andrew Joseph Sweeney Obituary

Andrew (“Andy”) Joseph Sweeney of Carlsbad, California, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2020, at the age of 92. Andy passed away peacefully at a family home in Vista with his children and grandchildren by his side. Andy was born on November 15, 1927, in Paterson, New Jersey, to mother Elizabeth Krempasky and father Joseph Sweeney. Andy was the only son in the family with sisters Marie (Sweeney) Bayda, Elaine Sweeney, Carol Sweeney, and Marge (Sweeney) Alberto. Andy attended Eastside High School in Paterson, New Jersey. He met and fell in love at first sight with Dolores Hines, of Paterson, New Jersey, at a local Catholic youth dance. The high school sweethearts married in 1950 and went on to have five children. Andy was a highly educated man, specializing in Aerospace Engineering. He graduated from Farleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey, with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Physics, and later pursued graduate studies from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. His career in aerospace engineering led him to a job opportunity in Carlsbad in 1968 where he managed the newly-opened Kearfott Singer aeronautics and guidance systems manufacturing plant in San Marcos, California. Andy and Dolores became members of La Costa Resort in 1974 and spent many happy decades living in their golf course home on the 3rd fairway. Andy enjoyed cooking, painting, traveling to Yosemite and a family home in Mammoth Mountain, spending time outdoors with his beloved dogs and watching the crows. Always dapper, he was a well-known jokester and charmer. Andy and Dolores were parishioners at Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside, California where Dolores was an oblate of the Benedictine Order. Andy was an avid wine collector and was a founding member of a vintage wine club which held monthly meetings at UCSD in the 1970s with his late son-in-law, Michael Francis Felong, MD, PhD. Andy was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Elaine Sweeney and Carol Sweeney, and his beloved wife Dolores. He is survived by his sisters Marie (Sweeney) Bayda (Peter Bayda, deceased) and Marge (Sweeney) Alberto and her husband Lou Alberto; children Paula Sweeney Brock (Brewster Lee Brock, deceased), Dolores Irene Sweeney (Michael Francis Felong, MD, PhD, deceased), Mark Andrew Sweeney and his wife Sue Sweeney, Benedict Joseph Sweeney, and Andrew Joseph Sweeney; grandchildren Michael Andrew Brock, Caitlin Brock Gale, Sean Patrick Sweeney, Meghann Marie Sweeney, Sarah Felong Wolfe, and Rachel Felong Kelter; great-grandchildren Ophelia Brock, Connor Brock, Madeline Brock, Camille Brock, Grace Brock, Audrey Brock, Emma Gale, Dominic Gale, Brewster Gale, Evelyn Gale, Ryan Sweeney, Keira Sweeney, and Brett Sweeney; sister-in-law Madeline Smith; and family friend Carmen Hares. Gary Sanders O.S.A. will co-officiate the Funeral Mass with an immediate burial to follow. Guests are limited to family only.
