Elaine "Sis" Rigali Obituary

Elaine “Sissy” (Loughran) Rigali, R.N., age 93, of Holyoke, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, September 7, 2020.  She was born in Holyoke, daughter of the late John & Regina (Rouleau) Loughran.  Sis was predeceased by her husband, Walter P. Rigali, who died in 1985 as well as her brothers Billy, Eddie & her sister, Shirley.  Sis is survived by her sister, Barbara Proulx (Bob) of Holyoke . Sis is also survived by 8 of her 10 children:  Christine Rigali (Milan) of Longmeadow; Deborah Torretti (Dominic) of Ludlow; Michael Rigali (Sara) of Holyoke, David Rigali of Holyoke, Paula Rigali O’Connor (Tracie) of South Hadley;  Peter Rigali (Joann) of Agawam, Anthony Rigali (Laura) of Holyoke and Gina Shawl (Fayaz) of Potomac, MD; Sis was predeceased by her son, James & her daughter Kathy as well as her grandson’s Peter & Marcel.  She was a loving grandmother of 22 grandchildren & 15 great-grandchildren, & many nieces and nephews.  Sis grew up in the flats and continued to be a lifelong resident of Holyoke.  Sis was Salutatorian of the Class of 1944 at the former Holy Rosary High School.  She was a Nurse Cadet during World War II while a student at the Providence Hospital School of Nursing & later became a Registered Nurse.  Sis worked at Providence Hospital, the Holyoke Geriatric Authority & also did private duty nursing.  She was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, was an avid reader & a big fan of audio books when she lost her sight.  Sis’s greatest love was her family & each member of her family will miss her deeply.   Her infinite wisdom & her ability to make everyone feel like they mattered will never be forgotten.  Her door was always open, never refusing anyone a conversation at the kitchen table or the front porch.  She will be sadly missed by all that had the joy & privilege of knowing her.  Family and friends are asked to meet for a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, September 14th at 10:00 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, Holyoke followed by burial in Saint Jerome Cemetery.  Calling hours will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2020 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Masks and social distancing is required. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Sis to Jericho, P.O. Box 1039, Holyoke, MA 01041 or Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.  The Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
