Betty Davis Obituary

Betty Louise Davis (nee Ostlund) of Eastend, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully on September 14, 2020 at the age of 89 at the Prairie Health Care Centre in Cabri, Saskatchewan. Betty was born in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. She spent her early childhood on their family farm in Eastend, and moved to Assiniboia with her family in 1937. After high school, Betty obtained her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. She worked in the Extension Service in Minnesota, USA before moving to Vancouver where she was employed by the Vancouver Sun. It was in Vancouver where she met her future husband Robert Davis. They moved to Eastend in 1961, with horse, dog and baby in tow; taking over Betty’s family farm. It is here they set down roots to raise a family, build a successful grain farm and develop a name for themselves in the purebred dog community. Betty worked as a dietician for Eastend Union Hospital for some years. She was also a member of UCW, Eastern Star, the Southwest Saskatchewan Kennel and Obedience Club and a founding and lifetime member of the Prairie Dachshund Club. She had recent circles of friends through the Book Club, the Garden Club and weekly bridge. She always grew a great garden rich in color and nutrition. Betty’s words “eat from a farm, not a factory” connected her professions as a farmer and a dietitian. In addition to her garden, Betty planted literally acres of trees on the farm … a legacy. She had a great love of dogs; raising, showing, grooming and teaching obedience. She met many wonderful friends through her doggies (wire-haired dachshunds) and their Deebardac Kennel. Betty and her girlfriends from university were close, meeting up on reunions or with their husbands as the OCHER (Old Canadian Home Economists Reunion) group. Following Bob’s death in 2009, Betty moved from the farm into Eastend where she enjoyed her new neighbours and social life. Betty was committed to her family, friends, community and the farm. She was a devoted spouse, mom, grandmother, sister and homemaker, Betty is predeceased by her husband Robert Davis, her parents Harry and Minnie (Johnson) Ostlund and her sister Doris Ostlund. She is survived by her daughter Anne Davis (Kevin Bristow), son Andrew Davis (Anne Tulloch) and her grandchildren Thomas Bristow (Kaity Letwiniuk), Simon Bristow (Sage Gowan), Abby Bristow (Grady Rowley), Hannah Davis (Oskar Cahill) and Rayna Davis (Nicolas Earl). Because of COVID, a private service will be held on the family farm on September 20, 2020. Urn Bearers will be her 5 Grandchildren and Honorary Pallbearers are Jim Johnson, Peter Johnson and Ian Johnson. By way of celebrating Betty’s life, the stories and memories and/or photos you might like to share would be much appreciated and enjoyed. These can be posted on www.binkleys.com. The family would love it if you would also like to remember her by planting a tree. This will serve as a memory of Betty that will continue to give through time and honor her love for the land and all she gave during her time here. Besides Betty’s love of nature (and trees), she was an avid reader and of course a dog lover through and through. With this in mind, donations, should you wish, could be directed to the Eastend Public Library or to the Swift Current SPCA/ Humane Society in care of Binkley’s Funeral Service at 306-297-2412 or 1-877-BINKLEY. A life well lived. Thank you to all of you who have sent your regards, it has meant so much.
