Sharpsburg, MD- William Lyon Gray, 87, of Sharpsburg, MD passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at Doey’s House in Hagerstown, MD.

 

He was born on May 31, 1933 in Bellefonte, PA to the late Samuel Hutchinson and Anne Valentine Lyon Gray.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane Isabel Gray in 2010.

 

William was a graduate of Westchester High School, received his undergraduate degree from Middlebury University, and his Master’s Degree in French from Rutgers University.

 

He was a Professor of French at Dickinson College until his retirement. He also owned and operated a Translation business in Washington, D.C.

 

He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Sharpsburg, MD.

 

William enjoyed farming and making homemade wine.  He had a green thumb and loved his cats.

 

He is survived by his niece Ellen Gray Bleecker of Ocean City, NJ; nephew Richard W. Bleecker of Jersey City, NJ; neighbors and friends Mike and Stacy Carder of Sharpsburg, MD; special friends John and Terri Griffith of Shepherdstown, WV.

 

He was predeceased by a brother and a sister.

 

The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Friday, September 11, 2020 from 10:00 am – 12:00 (noon).

 

Graveside services will be held at Bakersville Cemetery on Friday, September 11, 2020 at 2:00 pm with The Rev. Connor Newlun officiating.
