Norman Q. Maynard

Norman Q. Maynard was born on December 27th, 1931 to Ralph and Louise Maynard in Clark, SD. He was raised on the farm with his beloved siblings, Ralph, Dwight, Louise, Anna, Wayne and Meredith. In Norman’s Memoirs, many amazing stories of love and laughter are recorded for us recalling the life of a faith-filled family growing up during the depression. Norman attended South Elrod Elementary School #56 and graduated from Henry High School, Henry, SD in 1949. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized in June of 1949 and shortly thereafter enrolled in Minnesota Bible College. There, Norman not only prepared for a lifetime of ministry, but he also met his beloved wife, Norma McConkey Maynard. They were married in 1953 and recently celebrated 67 years of marriage. Along the way, three daughters were born: Cheri (Bob) Wallace of Kannapolis, NC; Paula (Chuck) Lynn of Copley, OH and Laurie (Greg) Montague of Stilwell, KS. Six grandchildren Juli (Aaron) Roach, Scott (Sophie) Wallace, Jaci (Beau) Benton, Donovan (Erika) Lynn, Joseph and Joshua Montague. Ten great grandchildren have also been added to the Norman Maynard family. (Eli, Lucy and Lily Roach; Olive and Amos Wallace; Sadie, Ronnie and George Benton; Colton and Ada Lynn.) Norman and Norma served at 5 different churches. First, in Clark, SD where they lived on the family farm and ministered at the South Elrod Church of Christ. In 1956, Norman and Norma moved 1,000 miles away to Warren, Ohio where they served at the Bolindale Christian Church. In 1958, they moved to Big Prairie, Ohio where they served at the Ripley Church of Christ. Next, they moved to Clinton, Ohio in 1965 where they served the Clinton Church of Christ for 28 years. Finally, in retirement, Norman joined the staff of a brand new church, Polaris Christian Church in Brunswick, Ohio. In addition to the local church, Norman served for many years in various capacities at the Round Lake Christian Camp. He was dean for over 13 years and served on the board of directors. Because of his interest in planting new churches, he volunteered his time with N.O.A.H – a church planting organization for non-denominational churches in northern Ohio. Norman loved to travel and shared his love with others by hosting and leading several trips to Israel, Europe, India and Alaska. In 1985, Norman went back to college and received his Master’s Degree in Ministry from Kentucky Christian College. Through the years, Norman inspired more than 40 young men and women to go to Bible College and enter full-time Christian Ministry. Because of this, he and his family have established a scholarship fund to assist young men and women going into ministry. Norman’s life was characterized by a deep love for the Lord, his family and the local church. His love for others was a hallmark of his life and many not only call Norm friend, but also know Jesus Christ as their Lord because of his influence. We will celebrate Norman’s life and legacy on Sunday, September 13th with calling hours at 2:00 pm followed by a 3:00 pm Celebration of Life service at Polaris Christian Church – 3289 Laurel Rd. Brunswick, Ohio (social distancing and masks are appreciated). The service will also be available on Facebook Live at https://www.facebook.com/PolarisChristian. Arrangements are being handled by Swigart – Easterling Funeral Home, www.swigarteasterlingfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be designated for the “Norman Maynard Ministry Scholarship Fund” designed to assist men and women attending Christian College and entering into full-time ministry. Make checks payable to Polaris Christian Church.
