Robert Joseph Betley

ROBERT J. BETLEY – LOVING HUSBAND, FATHER, GRANDFATHER, UNCLE AND FRIEND Bob was loyal, compassionate, generous, and exemplified Christian values. After graduating from University of Detroit High School and College with a B.S.E., he worked in several positions, but his longtime employment was with the US Army TACOM, where he was passionate about designing military vehicles, including the M1 Abrams tank, to support and keep US soldiers safe, and made many dear friends. Bob was continuously active in service to others, including the building of houses for Habitat, working with missionaries in Appalachia, as a wood craftsman to C.G.S. atria, social outreach to several groups, and personal service to family, neighbors, and friends. Of most importance in Bob’s life were his family, faith, and friends. He was born on March 30, 1937 to John and Mary (Nabozny) Skrzelowski in Detroit, a city he loved and fervently supported, including its sports teams. He is predeceased by his brothers the late Frank Stanford (the late Rosemary), the late John Selow (Bena), and sister the late Virginia (the late Ray) Walewski. With Eileen, his wife of 55 years, whom he treasured, Bob nurtured his daughters Maria (Thomas Schrems), Meghan, and son John (Nicole), and cherished his grandchildren Connor, Arlo, Henry, Elizabeth, Ciara, Miles, Patrick, and Colleen. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. As a man of faith, Bob was very active in St. Anastasia Parish in Troy, and St. Aloysius Parish in Detroit, where he made many close friends. Bob enjoyed travel throughout his life, including various countries, cultures, and peoples, and was especially enamored of trains and train travel. Bob died peacefully on September 2 of a recently diagnosed cancer in the compassionate care of the staff of Troy Beaumont Hospital. A private funeral mass was held at Church of the Transfiguration, with internment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Franciscan Outreach Program, 25255 Code Rd, Southfield, Michigan 48033, or St. Aloysius Church Neighborhood Services, 1232 Washington Blvd., Detroit, Michigan 48226.
