Obituary

James Brian Oliver New Waterford It is with profound sadness and unmeasurable pain that we announce the passing of our much loved husband, father, brother and poppy, James Brian Oliver. Brian was born on January 14, 1954 to the late James (Nipper) and Mary (MacDougall) Oliver. He was a proud 13th Streeter. Brian attended Mount Carmel Elementary, Breton Education Centre and then continued his education at St. FX. Brian was employed with the Cape Breton Island Housing Authority for 37 years. He was a well known musician who sang and played guitar at many parties and local venues, often with his father and uncle Bunnie Oliver (whom he looked up to). When Brian came through the door with his guitar, you were sure of a good time! He loved to bowl and play horseshoes and was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. His biggest love was his family; he cherished his wife and best friend Donna (MacDonald) Oliver, his three beautiful daughters who he adored; Jillian (Allan J) MacDonald of New Waterford, Jennifer (Jeff Wilcox) of Grande Prairie, AB, and Judy (Jason) Muir of Sylvan Lake, AB, and their children; Katie, Macey, Luke, Malory and Maggie, his three children of his heart; Cory (Laura) DeGiobbi, Evan (Kelly) DeGiobbi, Riley Griffin, all of New Waterford and their children; Issac, Clara, Kassidy, Haven, Ariah, and Katelyn. Brian was an amazing Poppy and his grandkids adored him. On one of their Friday night sleepovers, he invented his game of magic (you would hide under the covers until Poppy said the magic words and when you came out there would be a pile of treats). Brian always worried that someday they would grow out of the game, but as more babies arrived, the older ones enjoyed passing it along to the little ones. These wonderful memories will live on forever with his grandchildren. Brian came from a very loving family who will also feel the loss of their brother; Gary (Sheila), JB, Robbie (Darlene), Richard (Darlene), and his only sister Cathy (Sheldon MacDonald). He will also be missed by his aunts Marjorie Rose and Lorraine MacMaster and his many nieces and nephews. His friends from the “Birthday Club” meant the world to him; Billy Grace, Kenny Rose, Jerry Penny, BooBoo Syms, and the late Joe MacDonald. Also left to mourn, are Brian’s in-laws who cherished and loved him; mother-in-law Rene, sisters-in-law Debbie (Joe Demeter), Mary (Lorne Smith), Jeannie (Danny Ruelland), Laura (Brad MacDonald) all of New Waterford, Gail (Stanley Cameron), Holli (John Gormley), and special niece; Rebecca Eksal, of Alberta. Besides his parents, Brian was also predeceased by his grandparents; Bernard and Ann Oliver and Johnny and Mable MacDougall, sister-in-law; Helen (Crawford) Oliver, and father-in-law; Angus MacDonald. Brian was a humble man who was very happy and content with his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family. In lieu of flowers, please do a good deed or say a kind word. Brian’s favorite musician was Frank Sinatra and his favorite song was “I Did It My Way” and in the end that’s exactly what he did. Today I lost my best friend; tomorrow I will relish in the memories and the wonderful life Brian provided for me. For the rest of my life, until we meet again, I love you. Visitation will take place Wednesday, September 2nd from 2pm - 4pm and 7pm to 9 pm. A private family Funeral mass is being held. Covid - 19 restrictions will be in place. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave, New Waterford, 902-862-7500.
