John Schmeisser

79 of East River, With deep sadness the family of John (Jack) Albert Schmeisser announce his passing on August 28, with his loving wife of 59 years at his side. Jack was the eldest child of the late Mary Grandy and Wilkie Schmeisser. Born in Halifax, he spent his younger years in Canso, which he loved so much. Family was his priority, and over the years he took on many jobs to help support them. Jack had fond memories of working at Moirs Chocolates before moving his family to New Brunswick in the late 60's, where he worked at Kent Homes and a variety of other jobs with Irving. Returning to Halifax in the 70's, he found employment at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography and took great pride in participating on an Arctic expedition on the CSS Hudson. He retired from the HMC Dockyard Halifax, where he had worked for 25 years. John will be remembered for smoking cigars, playing the harmonica, and selling his pepperoni for the social club. An avid racehorse lover, John made many friends at many tracks around the Maritimes. A lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan, he was a dedicated Hockey Night in Canada viewer and enjoyed watching golf later in his life. Jack leaves behind his wife Irene (nee Savoie) his son John (Kathleen), his daughters Carol (Derrick), Colleen (Ron), Claudette (Kevin), June (Eric), and Rhonda (Dave). His 7 grandchildren Matthew (Sarah), Vanessa (Thomas), Amanda (Brandon), Jonathan (Alexis), Johnny (Nicole), Jacob and Olivia, and 3 great granddaughters Skyla, Kassie and Jersi-Leigh. And also his siblings, his sidekick Cecilia, James, Marion, Eugene, Georgina, Susan, Paul, Lloyd and many nieces and nephews. John is predeceased by his parents, brothers William and Thomas, and his beloved daughter Nina. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Hubbards, interment will be held at a later date. The family will be having a celebration of his life at his home on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 from 5pm to 8pm at 1961 East River Highway 3. Family and friends welcome.
