Marjorie "Marj" Barth

Marjorie “Marj” Barth, 83, of Charles City, passed away Thursday, August 27, 2020 at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial for Marj Barth will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with Reverend Tom Heathershaw officiating. Those in attendance will be asked to follow social distancing guidelines and to please wear a face mask. Burial will be at St. Mary’s (Rose Hill) Cemetery in Greene. Visitation will be at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a Scripture Service beginning at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Those in attendance will be asked to follow social distancing guidelines and to please wear a face mask. Marjorie “Marj” Louise (Merfeld) Barth, the daughter of Mark and Ruth (Squires) Merfeld, was born on June 3, 1937 in Waverly, Iowa. She graduated from Greene High School in 1955 and attended the University of Iowa and Wartburg College to receive her Bachelor’s Degree. Marj continued her education to attain her Master’s Degree at the University of Northern Iowa. Marj was united in marriage to Dan Barth on November 28, 1959, and this union was blessed with four children. In Marj’s own words, “I was a homemaker now and then, a mother at all times and a Special Education Resource Room Teacher at the Charles City High School from 1978 until my retirement in 2000.” Marj was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, University Women in Greene and Charles City, Iowa State Education Association, Council of Exceptional Children and was involved with Girl Scouts. She loved canoeing and was a habitual reader and learner. Marj loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Dan enjoyed being able to take some of the older grandchildren on vacation with them to spend a little more quality time. Marj’s beloved dog, Oscar, became her everyday companion especially in the last five years after Dan went to the care center. He will definitely be lost without her. Living family members include her four children: Jane (Ron) Smith of Farmington, Minnesota, Dan F. (Cindy) Barth of Indianola, Marilyn Wunsch of Kalona and Mary Bridget “Bitsy” Barth of Urbana, Illinois; 13 grandchildren: Jessica (Chad) Hammerschmidt, Sarah (Bryce) Jacobson, Emily Smith, Samantha Barth, Benjamin Barth, Nathan Barth, Kayla Barth, Kyle Barth, Amanda Wunsch (Erik Shelton), Allyson (Jason) Schable, Adam (Liz) Wunsch, Liz (Scott) Young and Katie (James) Vance; 12 great-grandchildren: Dylan, Jade, Corbin, Chase, Harper, Taylor, Avery, Lennox, Orion, David, Natalie and Peyton; her beloved dog, Oscar; along with several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Marj was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dan on December 8, 2019 and her sister, Donna Roach.
