Charles Robert Payet Obituary

Dr. Charles Robert “Bob” Payet was born in New York in March 1945 and passed away on August 1, 2020. He was the son of Charles and Jeanette Payet. He grew up in Cheraw, SC; in eleventh grade, Bob’s family moved to Florida where he graduated from Lake Wales High School. Continuing his education, Bob entered the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1966. As a member of the Air Force ROTC, he was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation. While at Chapel Hill, Bob met his future wife, Frances Anne (Andie) Trivette; they later married on August 5, 1967. Upon completion of a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Illinois in Champagne-Urbana in December 1969, he was promoted to captain in the U.S. Air Force. He served for four years at Andrews Air Force Base in Suitland, MD, and Brooke Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. Bob and Andie’s two children, Charles D. (Chip) and Megan, were born while they lived in San Antonio. When Bob was honorably discharged from the Air Force, he and his family moved to Wilmington, DE, where Bob started a life-long career with E.I. duPont de Nemours. Bob’s faith was incredibly important to him; he and Andie have been active members of St. Martins Episcopal Church in Charlotte since moving to Charlotte in 2005 and he served on the Vestry for three years. Bob first developed an interest in photography while living in San Antonio; this interest later developed into a passion for taking photos while traveling around the world. Bob and Andie moved to Aldersgate CCRC in December 2015, where Bob served as Vice President of the Resident’s Association from 2018-2019 and President for a few months in 2020. Bob is survived by his beloved wife Andie; his son, Charles D. Payet and wife, Fara of Charlotte, NC; and his daughter, Megan Jamroz of Raleigh, NC. He leaves behind two granddaughters, Natalie Mana and Elizabeth Payet; and two grandsons, Brian and Matthew Jamroz. He also leaves behind a large extended family. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be sent to St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, Charlotte, NC; Hospice & Palliative Care of Charlotte Region; or Thompson Child & Family Focus, Matthews, NC. A memorial service will be held in the future when possible.
