Richard (Lefty) John Luers passed away at home on July 31st, 2020 in Evansville, WI. Richard was born in Chicago, IL on January 6th, 1931, the son of Clarence and Evelyn (Luers) Leff. Richard was raised by his maternal grandparents,John and Bertha Luers. Richard is survived by his wife of 52 years, Susan (Petterson) Luers, his daughter Marie (James) Kyle and his son John Luers. He is also survived by his threegrandchildren, Ella Luers, Joseph Kyle and Thomas Kyle. Richard is further survived by his three sisters, Lois Streiker, Joyce (Charles) Hudson and Claudia (William) Ogan, his two brothers, Bruce (Gisela) Hannanand John (Julie) Luers. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert (Janet) Petterson, Jean Petterson, Joanne Dingle, Jeanette (Patrick) Finnane, John Petterson and James (Lorraine) Petterson. As well as many nieces and nephews. Richard graduated from Austin Technical High School in Chicago, IL in 1948. He also attended Milton College and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justiceand a Master’s of Business Administration Degree from Cardinal Stritch College. He also attended UW-Madison, completing courses in Guidance and Counseling. Richard was drafted into the US Army during the Korean War in 1952 and was Honorably Discharged in 1954. He was proud of his service and honored to go on theBadger Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. with his daughter, Marie. After his service in the Army he was hired to be a policeman in Evansville, and at the age of 29, was promoted to Chief of Police, being the youngest PoliceChief in Wisconsin. He also trained as an EMT and started the Evansville Ambulance Service and went on many ambulance calls helping and saving lives. Richard also established a Chaplains’ Division to work as a police resource, assisting citizens in a timeof need. He also converted the police department to a computer system to maintain records. He was a policeman for 30 plus years. After retiring from the police department he began a new career as a Charter Bus Driver for Van Galder Bus Company of Janesville driving all over the country,regularly traveling to his hometown of Chicago. Richard had many, many friends and interests. He had a pilot’s license, raced and repaired bicycles, loved classical music, traveled the US with his family,was an avid collector of model trains, old farm machinery and restored an antique jeep. He had a two-story barn where he could fix anything. Richard was an avid reader of many subjects all of his life and remembered everything he read. Richard and Susan enjoyed wintering in Florida for many years. As a father he was the very best and was always “on call” to do anything for us. He felt blessedto spend time with his grandchildren. Richard was proceeded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law Robert Dingle, Jay Blum and Ronald Petterson, niece Debra Olsen and nephew Christopher Ogan. Private family services are being held. A public visitation will be held from 11:30am until 1:30pm on Friday August 7, 2020 at Ward-Hurtley Funeral Home Evansville. Due to Covid restrictions masks and social distancing rules will be required. Burial will follow in Holy Cross cemetery Evansville with MilitaryHonors by V.F.W. Post 6905 Evansville
