Doris Johnson, Ph.D. Obituary

In Hamden, March 6, 2004. Doris Johnson, Ph.D., of Mix Ave. Born September 18, 1910 in Woodstock, Illinois. She was the daughter of the late Alfred E. and Flora Longanecker Johnson. Doris was a truly remarkable woman, a leader in her profession and in her community. Her accomplishments were many. After receiving her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, she worked in the field of dietetics as, among other things, the Director of Dietetics at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Doris also served as the President of the American Dietetics Association for two terms. She was a founder and the first treasurer of the American Dietetic Association Foundation. In addition to authoring a significant number of publications, Doris taught classes at Yale University’s Department of Public Health, the University of New Haven, and Albertus Magnus College, and took the time to mentor many persons seeking a career in the field of dietetics. Doris always led by example. In addition to helping advance the field of dietetics, Doris was an energetic and active member of the local community. She volunteered for many local non-profit organizations, performing the important work of providing services to directly individuals, in addition to serving on the boards of such organizations. For example, Doris served on the boards of the Regional Visiting Nurse Association, FISH and AARP. She also played an important role in helping to establish the Meals on Wheels program here in Connecticut. Doris was a dedicated member of the Church of the Redeemer where she served on the Boards of Deacons and of Trustees, and the Nominating Committee. In addition, she was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Group, and a past president and long-time member of Quota International of New Haven. During her life Doris received many awards and accolades, too many to recount here. One example of the important role she played during her life was the fact that she was among of the first women admitted to the American Men of Science, before that organization was renamed the American Men and Women of Science. For her part, Doris always eschewed accolades, downplayed her accomplishments and blushed at the notion that she should be recognized above anyone else. In addition to her dedication to her profession, her community and her church, Doris was a die hard Boston Red Sox fan, and an aficionado of the opera. She had an indefatigable, warm, and self-deprecating sense of humor, and even during her last months, as she was losing her battle with cancer, she made wisecracks and jokes that showed she was still in good spirits. Although she never married, Doris was a matriarch and linchpin of her family, playing an important role in the lives of her siblings and many nieces and nephews. She is survived by a sister, Mildred Johnson Thomas of Madison, WI, nephews, Gary Thomas of Guilford, James Thomas of Vancouver, WA, nieces, Arlene Thomas of Albuquerque, NM, Margaret Dion of Glastonbury, CT, Carol Shoff of Pittsfield, MA and Helen Williamson of Port Washington,WI, great niece Tracey Thomas of Hamden and numerous other great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Wallace Johnson A Memorial Service will be held at the Church of the Redeemer, Whitney Ave. at Cold Spring St, New Haven, on Friday, March 19, at 2 P.M. Arrangements with BEECHER AND BENNETT, 2300 WHITNEY AVE., HAMDEN.
