Merton Arlo Turner

Merton Arlo Turner, 87, of Elk Point, SD passed away on July 25, 2020 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was born on June 14, 1933 in Hudson, SD to Maurine Anderson who married Elmer Turner. He married JoAnne Thorson on December 6, 1953. They made their home in Elk Point and were blessed with three children. After graduating from Alcester high school, Merton had careers with Farmer’s Elevator, Swift Packing Company, Elk Point Country Club and as the Union County Assessor. His passion was being a life-long Farmer raising horses and cattle. Merton could generally be found at the farm, playing cards, watching sports, or with family. He was a long serving member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was loved by many and friend to all. Merton was preceded in death by his mother, father and a brother Richard. He is survived by his wife, JoAnne of Elk Point, SD; sons, Mark (Stephanie) of Elk Point, SD and David (Paula) of La Quinta, CA; a daughter, Ann (Jeff) Massey of Jefferson, SD; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Charles of Henderson, NV, Tom (Lucille) of Tehachapi, CA, Dennis (Margaret) of Sioux Falls, SD and Eldon (Deb) of Hudson, SD. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Union County Historical Society, or to the Elk Point Food Pantry.
