Herbert Duane Campbell, 90, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 3:50 pm July 18, 2020 at his residence. He was born January 25, 1930 in Mount Vernon to the late William and Mabel (Wheeler) Campbell. Herbert married Mae (Hall) Campbell on September 26, 1953. They were blessed with nearly 67 years of marriage. In addition to being a beloved husband, Herbert was a devoted father of Larry Campbell and wife, Joy of Lebanon, Tennessee, Jeff Campbell and wife, Jackie of Opdyke, Illinois, and Steve Campbell and wife, Angie of Mount Vernon, Illinois; loving grandfather of Shelby Barber and husband, Trent of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Derek Campbell and fiancé, Michaela Shawl of Clinton, Iowa, Jairus Campbell of Lebanon, Tennessee, Ryan Campbell and fiancé, Hannah Carbonaro of Mount Vernon, Illinois, and Allaina Webb of Opdyke, Illinois; caring great-grandfather of Beckett Barber and Brooks Barber, due in October; cherished brother of Janet Goins and husband, Leland of Hiram, Georgia and Thelma Becker of Minooka, Illinois; and dear uncle to many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert Campbell, Charles Campbell, Donald Campbell, and Joan McQueen. Herbert served in the Marines during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953. He was a skilled and talented carpenter and shared that talent while working for Lipps Construction before retiring in 1992. He was a member of Casey Avenue Baptist Church. Herbert and Mae were blessed with a beautiful family. He was the best husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather there was. He loved his family and was respected and loved by each one of them. He will be dearly missed. A Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 21, 2020 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home 601 South 42nd Street Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Graveside Service will begin at 1:30 pm at Kirk Cemetery in Ina, Illinois with Pastor Jerry Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow.
