Dickie Roger Spargo, Sr.

Mr. Dickie Roger Spargo, Sr., 81, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Courtland Terrace. He was born February 24, 1935 in Gaston County, a son of the late Lloyd Washington and Mary Leola Fraley Spargo. Mr. Spargo grew up on Cox Road across from what is now Gaston Memorial Hospital and as a youth he caddied at the old Gaston Country Club, then located along East Franklin Blvd.,(the current locations of Tindol Ford, Gastonia Nissan, Hobby Lobby, etc.) just a short walk from his home. Principle Warlick, at Warlick Elementary School would allow him to leave school early to go caddy golf at The Gaston Country Club as long as he got his school work done. He caddied for 10 cents per round and gave the money to his parents to help support their large family and extended family who lived and loved one another in that small home on Cox Road. Mr. Spargo served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War and he retired from Sun Drop. He was an avid golfer and achieved a hole in one. He was a member of Bethlehem Church. Survivors of Mr. Spargo include his beloved wife of 59 years, Shirley Winn Spargo; sons and daughters-in-law, Dickie, Jr. and Tammy Spargo; Rick and Lori Spargo, all of Gastonia; sisters, Sue Chappel of Raleigh; Mickey Burgess of Stanley; grandchildren, Christopher, Wesley, Katie, Hannah, and Noah Spargo; great-grandson, Jack Spargo; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Yates Spargo; sisters, Delores Mancussi, Treva Edmonson, and Phyllis Brown. The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 1, 2017 from 1:00pm to 1:45pm, at Bethlehem Church – South Campus. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday at the church with his son, Rev. Dickie Spargo, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow the service with Military Rites performed by the Gaston County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Dream Center Academy, 2782 Fairview Drive, Gastonia, NC 28052.
