James Fenton Moorhead

Pastor J. Fenton Moorhead, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 9, 2020, surrounded by his family. Fenton is preceded in death by his parents Ted and Emily Moorhead. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary who he married in 1960. He is also survived by his brother, Ted Moorhead, sister, Emily Jo; his three children and their spouses. He has seven grandchildren and one great grandson, all whom he loved so very dearly. Fenton was a graduate of Mississippi College, Baylor University, and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was licensed and ordained by Coral Baptist Church in Miami, FL. Fenton’s pastorates included Associate Pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC, North Central Baptist Church in St. Petersburg FL, First Baptist Church in Lake Park, FL; Minister to the Generation Gap at First Baptist Church in West Palm Beach, FL. Pastor of First Baptist Church in Salisbury, NC, Applewood Baptist Church in Lakewood, CO, and Sugar Creek Baptist Church in Sugar Land, TX, and he served as Missions Pastor at Brookwood Church in Simpsonville, SC. Early in his ministry Fenton was honored as one of Florida’s Five Outstanding Young Men and Florida’s Outstanding Young Religious Leader in the early 1970’s. He founded the Fenton Moorhead Evangelistic Association (FMEA) and was a key leader in the Jesus Movement in South Florida. Fenton was an integral part of founding several ministries including Second Mile Mission Center, Living Water International, Set Free Alliance, and Child Freedom Coalition. Fenton was known as one of America’s great missions’ entrepreneurs. As a pastor with a deep love for people in need and a strong teacher of God’s Word, Fenton was a visionary, effective leader and a mentor of young pastors and church planters. A memorial service will be held at Sugar Creek Baptist Church Worship Center on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at 2:00 pm. The service will be livestreamed at sugarcreek.net In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fenton Moorhead Evangelistic Association that encourages high impact mission projects around the world.
