Virginia Frances Elliott Obituary

Virginia Frances Elliott, age 92, passed away on July 2, 2020 at Regency Grande Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dover, NJ. Born November 21, 1927 to John and Estelle Middaugh, Virginia immediately became beloved baby sister to five-year-old Doris. Virginia grew up in Rockaway Borough. As a young girl her passions were dancing, playing guitar, piano and singing. At an early age she developed a love for reading, Virginia often boasted of reading every book in the Borough Public Library regarding animals. When a new ‘animal’ book was cataloged, the librarian reserved it for Virginia so she could be first to read it. She often reminisced of her school days, cheerleading at Rockaway High, square dancing at Egberts Lake and shenanigans with friends. After graduating High School, she began working at Siro’s Drug Store on Main Street. Virginia enjoyed her position there as it enabled her to help friends and neighbors. She met her future husband James Elliott walking to a local carnival and a courtship soon began. After his honorable discharge from the US Navy, Jim and Virginia married in September 1946. They established a home in Denville and were blessed with three daughters. When her children were young, Virginia was a homemaker. She spent countless hours sewing, knitting, and crocheting, making school dresses, hats, mittens, sweaters and afghans. She delighted in playing the piano, her all-time favorite song being “The Pennsylvania Polka” which she happily played over and over again at the request of her children. A home cooked meal was on the table every night…dinner is at 5:00, don’t be late!! Every holiday and birthday were a reason for celebration, homemade food was plentiful as well as family and friends. Memorial Day picnics were a must and she always enjoyed a good St. Paddy’s Day celebration. During her homemaking years Virginia was active in The Girl Scouts, PTA, volunteering at her children’s schools and monthly meetings of her “Card Club”, playing Pinochle with girlfriends. An ardent football fan, her teams were both the Giants and the Jets, she could never decide between the two due to her undying love for both Frank Gifford and Joe Namath. Animals were always a part of her household, fish, turtles, birds, cats, dogs or rabbits, sometimes all at once, there was always a critter in her house to love. Cherished Summer vacations were always spent at her favorite place, the Jersey Shore, particularly Point Pleasant. Days were spent at the beach soaking up the sun and jumping the waves, evenings were spent on the boardwalk, taking in the sights and enjoying a waffle ice cream. Virginia rejoined the workforce and was employed by The Mennen Company as one of “The Moms” working the production line. She was later employed by Ziyad Corporation and “Classics” women clothing store, both in Denville and lastly, eight years with the firm of McConnell and Norton in Stanhope. While working, her love of sewing continued as she helped with making prom gowns, a wedding gown for her daughter and patchwork quilts for her grandchildren. Virginia always had an open door. She had a deep commitment to her family and was a devoted Mother and loving “Nanny” to her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Always a sweet and caring lady with a huge heart. Predeceased by her husband, James Elliott; sister, Doris Davenport; son-in-law, Douglas Medaugh; and grandson- in-law Sean Brandstetter. Virginia leaves a treasure trove of memories to her daughters: Sandra Medaugh, Debra Norris (Richard) and Pamela Squire (Robert); cherished grandchildren: Carrie Anne and Adam Medaugh (Trish), Jessica Brandstetter, Amanda Fink, Rikki Leigh Norris and Robert III & Kevin Squire; and her great-grandchildren: James and Raedyn Kirchner, and Dylan and Gavin Fink. Virginia’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the entire staff at Regency Grande for the excellent care given to our Mom this past month. A Life Celebration gathering will be held at Whitham- Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave, Rockaway on Friday, July 17, 2020 from 5:00pm -6:30PM. A Memorial Service will begin at 6:30PM.
