Joan Swigert

Joan Swigert, 70 of Fort Wayne, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2020, in the Visiting Nurse Hospice Home with her family by her side. On November 22, 1949, she was born in LaPorte, Indiana, to the late James Hampton and Ruth Elizabeth (Miller) Cherry. "Joanie", as her friends called her, graduated from LaPorte High School in 1968. She had a variety of careers throughout her life including serving as the Mayor's Secretary, a realtor, a legal secretary as well as being employed in advertising for many years. She was married to the late Roger Murphy in 1969, spending most of their married life in Warsaw, Indiana, working and raising their children. On Nov. 21, 1998, in Logansport, she married Robert Swigert. They lived in Logansport until his death on January 5, 2007. Joan is survived by one brother, James Hampton Cherry, Jr., of New York; her two children, Erik (Gretchen) Murphy, of Rochester, IN; and Jennifer (Dale) Drasny, of Ft. Wayne, IN. Also surviving are one grandson, Evan Murphy; four granddaughters, Kaylea Stump, Blake Drasny, Alex Drasny and Drew Drasny; and her beloved canine, Libby. Joan showed love through her cooking. She went above and beyond to make birthday dinners and holiday meals special. She had a spirited personality and she loved to read suspense novels. She passed her love of reading on to her son and they often shared and traded books. She was quick to say, "I love you" and she loved to help people in need. Joan was always willing to give whatever she had to help others. She wrote poetry throughout different periods of her life as a way to express herself but often kept them to herself. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. A Funeral Service celebrating Joan's life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 3, at Fisher Funeral Chapel, 1801 Chase Road, Logansport, with Pastor Mike Cloud officiating. Friends will be received from noon until the time of the service Friday. Interment will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery.
