Jay Carr
<p>H. Jay Carr, age 78, of Grand Rapids passed away Thursday, June 25 from complications of Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sarabeth nee Schalliol, children Chris (Jessica), Adrianne (Laron) and 4 grandchildren.</p> <p>He was preceded in death by his parents Helen and Fred Carr of Jamestown NY.</p> <p>Jay was a man of few words except when it came to Scrabble. An avid reader, his preference was science fiction and history. Competition chess was a favorite pastime. Jay had achieved Expert status and was a tournament director for many years. He served on the board of the Michigan Chess Association. Board games with friends Ed and Stan were enjoyed well into his illness.</p> <p>Jay was a runner and a member of Grand Rapids Track Club. He also enjoyed volunteering at Meijer Gardens and helping sort books for the Friends of the EGR Library.</p> <p> Jay was known as “Doctor Jay” during his 20 years at Amway in tech support of the mainframe computers, having grown up along with computer technology.</p> <p>He was a graduate of Yale and Purdue University.</p> <p>Cremation has taken place and an outdoor gathering of friends and family is planned for a later date to be announced.</p> <p>Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.</p> <p>Special thanks to the staff at Beacon HIll Memory Care.</p>August 16, 1941 - June 25, 202008/16/194106/25/2020
