Doris Shallcross Obituary

Doris (Mewes) Shallcross, 91, of Berkeley Heights, NJ, passed away on June 6, 2020 with loving family members by her side.    Doris was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Walter, her older sister, Penny, and a granddaughter, Justine.  She leaves behind five children, Kathy, Scott, Todd, David, Tim and their beloved families, including twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.    Doris was born Jan 19, 1929 in New York City to Frederick and Marie Mewes.  She grew up on the North Shore of Long Island and graduated from Sea Cliff High School.  She attended Ithaca College before she met her future husband, Walter, while working at Pierce Country Day Camp in Roslyn, NY.  Doris and Walter raised their five children first in Union and then Berkeley Heights.  They lived together in the same house for sixty years.                                         Doris’s life was centered around family and friends and her greatest joy was in giving to others.  She was warm, generous, social and fun loving.  She enjoyed music, Broadway musicals, theatre, movies, games and athletics. She loved to swim, play tennis and was a passionate bridge player.  Doris appreciated both hearing and telling a good joke.  She hosted memorable dinners, holidays, picnics and birthdays.  She and her husband remained especially close with a group of lifelong friends they called “the gang.”  She was always involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives.  Her family could unconditionally rely upon her to help in any manner.  She took particular pleasure in watching them play sports, taking them to the movies and other activities.  Doris frequently traveled to Hawaii to visit her sister and parents.  She truly embodied the “Aloha spirit” of treating others with love and respect.         Throughout her life Doris was involved in the life of the community: she was a member of the Women’s Club, she served as President of the high school Booster Club and was active in Senior Citizens.  Doris worked retail for Marco’s Sporting Goods in Summit, NJ and for thirty summers was a group leader at Pierce Country Day Camp in Roslyn NY.    Doris’s family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers: Chris Ciphers and Wellington Ticharwa for their tireless support over the last few years.         Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Paul Ippolito Berkeley Memorial. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations can be made by visiting Doris’s personalized memorial contribution page at https://inmemof.org/ to the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad or a charity of your choice. For additional information and to send condolences please visit https://www.ippolitofuneralhomes.com/
